The Awakening

The night was always Sally’s favourite time of day. In the darkness her midnight scales made her all but invisible, and she loved the thrill of hunting among the shadows. The Viridian Labyrinth was always teeming with life no matter the hour, and there was no shortage of prey even when the sun’s rays vanished. In the jungle, everything was fair game, and no creature could escape the Banescale’s wickedly sharp talons. Sally was also fond of another pastime – sneaking into dragon lairs and making off with whatever caught her eye. Even the keenest sentries had trouble spotting her when she really put her mind to it, and she was no slouch at slipping through magical wards either. It was a point of pride that no clan had ever thwarted the dark marauder, although a few put up a decent challenge (she made extra sure to cover her tracks for those; there was a difference between pride and stupidity). It was always amusing to see a full lair of dragons in absolute uproar the morning after – from a safe, well-hidden distance, of course. Nature territory was big enough that even with almost weekly ‘visits’ Sally managed to enjoy relative anonymity by simply moving often. It helped that the Viridian Labyrinth was, well, an actual labyrinth, so even if anyone pegged her as suspicious it was hatchling’s play to disappear into the twisting maze. Her favourite place was by far the Shrieking Wilds, where the jungle canopy was so thick there was barely any difference between night and day. But at some point even that felt stifling, and Sally decided it was time to spread her wings and go beyond her elemental homeland. As she travelled, the Banescale kept up her raiding habit, although she kept things low-key except for a certain time in the year. For some reason, during the tenth month her body became better in every way, with sharper talons and fangs, keener senses, and larger, more powerful muscles. For the whole of October Sally transformed into the absolute best version herself, and her nightly activities during that time were her most daring. It was on one such night that she met her mirror match. She had been prowling in the Tangled Wood for some time, enjoying the thrill of stealing from the famed tricksters of dragonkind. Shadow dragons were harder than most to sneak up on, but for Sally it was a delightful challenge. She’d been scoping out a particular clan when an almost soundless rustle from above reached her unnaturally sharp ears, and she looked up to meet a pair of gleaming crimson eyes set in a face that was a near reflection of her own. The male Banescale had scales as dark as hers, with royal purple wings and skeletal markings the colour of dry bone. In the gloomy shadows of Driftwood Drag he looked like her ghostly doppelganger, but Sally had no fear. Mischief knows mischief, after all, and a single glance was all it took for them to recognise a kindred spirit. |

“A nightcrawler, eh?” the male’s voice was a low rumble, sending a warm shiver up her spine. “It takes one to know one,” Sally said, baring her razor-sharp fangs in a wolfish grin. Her expression was mirrored by his own, and when he next spoke it was with a friendly but competitive edge, “Shall we see who’s better? Most impressive loot wins.” “Oh, you’re on.” The poor clan that was their unwitting target never even knew what hit them. Sally managed to smuggle out an enormous sack full to bursting with coins, while the other somehow nabbed a hefty iron chest. His was larger, but her coin-filled burlap sack undoubtedly made more noise and was much trickier to move stealthily. “A draw then?” Plague eyes peered at the substantial spoils. Sally flicked her spiked tail to draw attention, then remarked, “Only if you tell me your name, stranger.” The male started, as if just realizing they had just met mere hours ago. “Fair enough,” he replied, looking at her, “I’m Jack. And you are?” Dark red met vivid green in a curiously intense staring match, and the silence stretched until she smirked, “Sally.” And that, as they say, was the start of something beautiful. It took some adjusting to get used to having a partner, but Sally found being a duo a refreshing change. They just fit, like hammer and anvil, each complementing the other in deadly harmony. If she was a terror on her own, as a pair they were unstoppable, and they travelled Sornieth as free-roaming night raiders, slipping into even the most closely guarded lairs under the cover of darkness. By the time the two Banes decided to settle down they were known throughout the land as legendary marauders, and the clan that agreed to take them in was both relieved that such a formidable pair wanted to join them and wary of any shenanigans. They needn’t have worried, really; Sally was perfectly willing to be a (more or less) model clanmate eleven out of twelve months of the year. During October, though? Well, it was Halloween season, and she had plenty of tricks to play and treats to steal. After all, the world needs a reminder every now and then that “Sally and Jack” were still very much names to remember. | . |
