VOGEL, JOACHIM
Alchemist
"Do you, too, desire to uncover
the secrets of the world?"

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
___________________ Joachim is a talented alchemist and researcher; a name quite known amongst his peers in the field, but an untold tale to the usual dragon. He is only interested in his research and experiments, and everybody else he meets is but another fleeting encounter in his life. Aloof and indifferent he may look, but Joachim has a sense of compassion and will help if he is needed. His relationships with others is not many; most who know of him are fellow competent researchers, and even then, their understanding of him is incomplete. He is fine holding a conversation or two, but he doesn't seek out nor wish for deeper relationships—he feels, the lesser ties he has, the more freely he can conduct his work where dangers are present and death is an imminent possibility.

Joachim never stays in one place for too long; the only residence he owns is the library, and that is nothing more than an archive to him. If he was not busying himself with his alchemical experiments, then he would be off on an expedition for research. He holds great pride in his work, however low he keeps his profile.

___________________ Joachim was born from a lone egg; he was raised by a bustling hatchery near The Observatory from as far back as he could remember. He did not have the luxury of a family's warmth, despite being under a hatchery's care; but no matter, for the grand sight of The Observatory's figure in the distance, along with imaginations of the Arcanist by the fabled Eye of Many Lenses, kept Joachim company during the night.

He had been fascinated with knowledge from a young age and looked up to the Arcanist; as one would comment, he was quite the ardent child of Arcane. Further on, as he matured, his interests in knowledge strayed from the ones of the Arcanist. He did not want to learn about the stars and whatever hypothetical secrets they held; he wanted to learn about the world, the secrets of Sornieth itself. Ambitiously, he wanted to break the 'laws' of the world, to render the impossible possible.

Alchemy soon became his passion. Joachim believed that alchemy had the possibility to change the world, and as an alchemist, it was his duty to break the barriers of the world; in his youth, he had firmly believed that, and though his stance did not wane over time, Joachim noted additionally that such fruits of his labour did not necessarily mean good for Sornieth. This, however, did not weigh him down as he continued with his experiments, for what was there to stop if it was possible? At the very least, for the sake of keeping peace, Joachim had kept these experiments to himself.

Joachim indeed never stayed long in one place for the purpose of his research. Despite this, he had taken up a request from old acquaintances of the Windswept Plateau—a request to lend his wit and tutor their youngest son of the family, Shimizu Tori. Though Joachim had only done his experiments and research for himself, he did not reject it even if it meant there was a high possibility he would be stuck in the same place for quite a long time.

The wintry season had begun to dawn into all of Sornieth when Joachim had left the Starfall Isles for this reason. It was nothing short of an unpleasant trip, but Joachim had been used to travelling and he had done so in far worse conditions. He had come across a young Imperial during his journey— an abandoned child. Joachim doubted that the hatchling's parents were ever coming back for it, if it had any to begin with. However, he could not bear to leave such a fragile life alone, in the cold and biting snow, and thus took him in and gave him the name Tora.

About Tora—
"He is a brilliant child. Still nurturing his skills and making nothing remarkable, but nonetheless, he has the potential. A bright potential, indeed — it truly would be a waste if he ventured on another path in the future, though it isn't my place to dictate the steps he takes with his own feet. The only matter that troubles me is his lack of confidence... Naturally, as an apprentice, an alchemist still in learning, he is expected to make mistakes. My duty as his mentor is, of course, to correct those mistakes and guide his understanding onto a better path. It helps him improve his alchemy, and is thus important, but I will admit, the disappointment he shows whenever his work is proven flawed is... disappointing for me too, to say the least. Cursed are the sense of a Skydancer, I suppose. Either way, I do wish he would at least hold himself to lower, more acceptable standards. Too much pressure and he might come to hate the very thing he devotes himself to, hm?"

A Rainy Night—
"Do take care the weight of your steps; Tora is asleep. It was quite a predicament to coax him into settling down, after that thunderstorm."

Starfall Isles—
"My motherland. I lived there for most of my early life, being an orphan raised in a hatchery. We weren't too far off from The Observatory, and its figure in the distance was my occasional company on many days and nights. Perhaps a more... disastrous deity among the others, the Arcanist is still nonetheless a deity held with great respect among us children of the Arcane, especially amongst the knowledge-seeking bunch of us. I recall, as a hatchling, having huge ambitions and hoping that one day I would be able to navigate the faraway skies with the Eye of Many Lenses, right next to the side of the Arcanist. Very ambitious, no?"

About Tori—
"I journeyed from my stay in the Starfall Isles all the way to the Windswept Plateau for the sake of becoming this boy's tutor. In actuality, it was a request from his parents, the Lord and Madame of the Shimizu family; I had been in contact with them occasionally, prior to their request... old friends, I suppose, are hard to refuse. Either way, this boy is a pain to teach, having none of the appreciation for the sciences and much less alchemy like his mother does. Not much of a concern for me; each individual has their own interests, and his happens to be none other than his family's sword arts. His father is vexed about his attitude though, and as much as he seems to hate him, the mention of his father's inteference always seems to ground him down a little — and but of course, I will be occasionally using that to my advantage when it suits me. It's fine if he's not paying attention, but I'd prefer Tora to not be dragged along too."

About Shimizu Ichika—
"Tori's mother, and a friend of mine — acquaintance, I'd say, but Madame Shimizu thinks that it is too dull of a title for our relationship. In all fairness, we do have quite some history with one another. Had we not been familiar, I wouldn't be staying in the Windswept Plateau, tutoring her younger son, of all things. I've known her during my earlier years of travel, back when she was Lady Shimizu. Tori's father, whom people know as Lord Shimizu, used to be her mere manservant in those days. I suppose one eventually ends up with another which knows them most."

The Arcanist's Token—
"This trinket? There is nothing particular about it... just a well-crafted visage of the Arcanist, thoughtfully carved with a careful hand. It is something of value to me, though; it goes without a saying that I have this on my person at nearly all times of the day. It was something I bought in the fresh years of my youth, an exquisite handicraft that was supposedly the only one of its kind. It was quite the sum for such a small item, though I have not come to regret it even now."

Snow—
"I don't mind the cold; it is something I've grown to tolerate over the years of my journeying in conquest of research. I've visited the lands of the Southern Icefield quite a handful of times, and have recently heard about leads on the Ancients huddled in its freezing grasp... perhaps it is time for me to make yet another return to its biting winds. Though, I mustn't be careless now—with Tora as well as my obligation to the Shimizu family, it is not exactly responsible of me to simply up and leave."

The Library—
"Wonderful, is it not? The books you see here were all collected by me, over the years of my travelling around Sornieth. It is not a public library, but more of a personal collection of sorts... most of the archive is related to my work and not just mere books I simply picked up, though. I'm sure many will be stupefied of my possession of such a grand building, considering my... shallow pockets, to say the least — but, alas, that is a puzzle that must be solved by oneself. By all means, take this as an exercise for your brain."

The Familiars That Roam—
"I'm not usually one to care about the company of familiars, though I suppose one or two would not hurt. My Enchanted Libra watches over the library while I'm gone; it is quite the smart creature, though not as fond of others. The Hulking Greatowl... I usually bring it with me on my journeys. It can race the speed of most dragons in-flight, and proves to be an efficient messenger as well as lookout. ...There is as well a Scroll Stealer and Kyorinrin that had somehow made its way into the library. Concerning, I would say, but they seem to be obedient in the least. I'll leave them."

'The Ballad of 'Siegfried''—
"Tora once asked me to tell him a story. A 'bedtime story', I suppose. I don't have an ounce of familiarity with such things, but nevertheless, I did still try my hand at it — not that I would proudly take credit for everything. Naturally, it goes that I am no storywriter, but I have read the occasional tale and such. 'The Ballad of Siegfried' is really just a recolor of a book I've read in my youth. It speaks of a young valiant hero who embarks on a journey to fulfill his mission of 'saving the world', and along the way he picks up a companion, one he gradually forms a strong bond with, in spite of their initial differences and opposing stances. Theirs is a story that ends in betrayal and tragedy, though. With his hand forced, the hero eventually 'rids the world of the wicked' — the person whom he had once believed to be his trusted ally, the sole sharer of his secrets, perhaps even his brother-in-arms. The young, valiant hero is no longer 'young', and neither is he 'valiant'; he is only left to mourn the death of something precious to him, a death that he had induced by his own hands. His hands are stained with the blood of countless foes, but the one of his comrade is not among them as 'the enemy'. ...The End, as they say. The story of the tragedic hero Siegfried follows quite closely to the original. I've only changed the names here and there, and simplified some details. It is no revolutionary literature by any means, but personally, I do think the ending is quite a refreshing change from the usual 'all's well that ends well' kind of conclusion. ...Perhaps not the typical contender for a child's bedtime story, but Tora did seem to enjoy it, and what's done has been done anyways."

My Research—
"It is going well, as expected."

Alchemy In The Works—
"If you would kindly leave, please. I would rather avoid any and all unnecessary casualties; I doubt one would be glad to subject themselves to the effects of an experiment gone wrong, either."

Alchemist's Guild—
"Ah, the memories it brings. I was a young and budding alchemist then, having stumbled across one of the Guild's annual conferences in the Lightweaver's domain. A turning point, I suppose it was. The Guild was eager to acknowledge my prowess then, and even made me a co-counsel. Well, that is all in the past now — I've never attended the Guild's meetings nor involved myself in their matters since my departure from the von Ebonhides."

Tora's Upbringing—
"He may be a mere hatchling I happened to cross upon my journey to the Shimizu Estate, but I do care for him as much as any other responsible of him would. I don't believe myself to be skilled at raising children, but the boy is happy, and I suppose that is all that matters."

My Favourite Food—
"Hmm... I have never put much thought into these things before. I suppose I do enjoy the sweet taste of Dusky Apples; not a bad choice to be used in Apfelkuchen."

Swordsmanship—
"It's nothing much; just enough for self-defense, if I ever come across any troubling encounters during my journeys. Though, I usually travel discreetly to spare myself the trouble. Who taught me? ...Hmph, well isn't that nostalgic."

Friedrich von Ebonhide—
"Hmm, the young master von Ebonhide. We do have quite some history with one another, so to say. The younger me had embarked on a so-called 'journey across Sornieth', living plenty of days with miserably shallow pockets and huge amibitions. That was, until I came across a particular 'Alchemist's Guild' stationed in the Lightweaver's Sunbeam Ruins. Quite eager I was, to prove my worth to the crowd. It was quite... a show, I'd say. I recall being dubbed as the dark horse of the night, or some other, but I digress. It was through that that I met Friedrich and became associated with the von Ebonhides, who provided me lodgings and funds in return of my 'knowledge'. All good things come to an end, though. Especially those which are just mere illusions of the truth. I don't particularly hold anything against Friedrich now, though I did leave the von Ebonhides due to the lies and deceit I was given."

Friedrich von Ebonhide— Guilt and Blame
"If the public — if Sornieth knew — Friedrich would be dubbed as much of a perpetrator as his father. Not that they would be wrong, exactly. One cannot control the life that they are born into, though, and I suppose that such a life is one that Friedrich has the best of misfortunes to land into. Bitter terms, we parted on. But now I am able to ponder on our spiteful farewell and the lines in-between that the me of the past had disregarded as nothing more than 'lies atop lies'. Ah, I will say, it would be quite a shame if young master von Ebonhide never frees himself of the flimsy shackles that tie him to the house he emptily calls 'family'."

Der Tod schneidet die Flügel eines freien Vogels ab.

It appears that this research is cut short... along with my life. Quite peculiar; I had never thought a day like this would arrive. Just when I can feel the mystery I long to unveil standing before me... how laughable. I would ironically chuckle at my demise if I could, but my heart is only clouded with unease, for Tora's wellbeing and his reaction of my death. I have already written him a letter and sent it off to be delivered to the Windswept Plateau; I believe in that my trustworthy avian companion will bring the letter to the right receiver, otherwise I fear that Tora might be misguided into thinking that I am merely on a lengthy journey and will nevertheless return. Though, is that not what orphaned hatchlings are told when their parents have left the world? ...Then again, I suppose Tora is no longer a 'hatchling' that will be persuaded by such euphemisms.

Now that I am at the end of my road, I feel regretful. I have been living for quite a long time; perhaps it is now time for me to depart. Yet, if I had been given another chance to travel back in time, knowing the outcome of my expedition, I would have chosen otherwise. At the very least, Tora did not come along, for which I am grateful. He need not experience what I am going through now — the harsh cold eating into my skin as I await my imminent death... The nature of the Icewarden's domain could not even be so kind as to grant me a swift end.

Auf Wiedersehen,
Joachim Vogel.

Moment of Departure.

To be at the end of one's long road... what an uncertain feeling. Alas, it is not as if I can do anything either way. I do feel sorry for that Guardian companion of mine — if I do not fault him, he will. Such is the bleak nature of Guardians, isn't it...

I've thought of myself as without relations in this world to be regretful for leaving, but it seems a misconception was all it was. Inevitably, one will form bonds that they cannot rid... and I do wish, for once, that things had gone differently.

Even
I feel rueful being in the claws of death.
