It’s a plant
Sundew had always thought that he was a nature dragon. After all, he had been raised in the Viridian Labyrinth. His name, appearance... even his eye color was close enough that he never questioned his element. It disappointed him that he couldn’t do any nature magic, but that in itself wasn’t too unusual. The only thing that might have tipped off a careful observer was his love of exploration. As a hatchling, he got into all sorts of trouble wandering around the dense forests.
According to the adults in his old clan, he was first found sleeping under a sundew plant, hence his name. They searched for any dragons that might have lost their hatchling, but when no one came forward it was assumed his egg had been abandoned and he was accepted into the clan. He grew up felling like a bit of an outsider, not having any family in the clan. While the dragons in his clan cared for him, he still felt like there was something missing. He’d climb as high up on the Behemoth as he could and look out across the horizon, wondering what the world was like out there.
One day, two brightly colored dragons visited the clan. The mirror and snapper told stories of clans all over Sorineth, especially about their current home in the wind territories. Sundew listened to their tales with amazement, and asked what it was like in Wind. The visitors were confused. “Aren’t you from a wind clan?” the snapper asked, to which Sundew replied that no, he was a nature dragon and had never left the Viridian Labyrinth. The mirror, having seen both wind and nature dragons, pointed out that Sundew’s eyes were too light for a nature dragon. After asking the clan elders about his history, Sundew finally realized that he might be a wind dragon after all. He asked if he could join the pair for their trip back to wind, and after gathering up his few possessions and saying goodbye to the clan they set off.
Upon entering the wind territories, Sundew lost any doubts he had about his element. He was definitely a wind dragon, it felt so right to be soaring over the cliffs with the breeze in his face. After thanking the mirror and snapper, he set off on his own to find somewhere to stay and maybe even locate his family. As he was heading to the Cloudsong, the winds began to die down, and he stopped for the night on the Reedcleft Ascent where other dragons were settling down to wait for the wind to pick back up. But the wind didn’t return in the morning, or even the next...
He was in the right place at the right time, because a new clan was about to be formed that could use his help.
Now, Sundew helps out Orchid in the clan gardens. Even though he’s not a nature dragon, he still knows a lot about plants due to being raised in the nature territories. He wears a wind emblem because he was getting tired of people thinking he was a nature dragon. He occasionally visits his old clan in nature to say hi and see if any new information has been found regarding his family.
