Personality:

To the outside world, Zenith is a mysterious figure that only rarely descends to civilization below to trade for various materials such as gears, wires and other crafting supplies. However, to his children, he is a loving and fair father who gladly teaches them all he knows. Living high above the plane of fire in a hidden den, he spends his time tinkering with new inventions of his that may make the lives of the common folk a little bit easier. However, his life was not always this simple and peaceful.

Once upon a time, he was part of an assassin group that was involved in the war between water and fire. He created gadgets for them, acting as a quartermaster of sorts. The group was sided with water, but over time Zenith's conscious started to slowly creep up on him. He began to question his own actions, eventually deciding to drop everything and leave the group entirely. He fled to a mountain in the fire plane and took shelter there, vowing never again to make weapons of war. Later, he rescued and took in his two wonderful children. He has no regrets about abandoning his past life, and now only looks toward the future.

Lore:

Drip, drip, drip...

Zenith glanced up from his workbench only to be startled by the sight of a nocturne covered in blood in the doorway. "Are you alright—" He made to grab a first aid kit, only for Oriella to wave him off nonchalantly.

"None of it's mine. Honestly, you're doubting my skills?" A pang of something uncomfortable shot through Zenith's chest, and he instead grabbed a towel to throw to her. The job that was supposed to happen tonight was one of the more unpleasant ones, and involved the deaths of quite a few innocents. Knowing this, Zenith couldn't quite meet his coworker's eyes.

"I know you know what you're doing, but I can't help worrying anyway," he sighed. Giving up on his current project for the time being, he leaned back in his seat. "Oriella... I have a question. From one friend to another." She nodded to indicate she was listening, even as she wiped the blood from her wings. "How do you feel about what we're doing? Do you think... it's worth it?"

Oriella's eyes cut to his, and there was a strange, unreadable expression on her face. "We're in the middle of a war," she said gently, almost as if to comfort him. "We can't afford to think about things like that. The best thing we can do is make our money and survive." She unhooked her tool belt and tossed some of the gadgets she had borrowed back to him. "We're in this together, remember."

"...I know. I think tonight's job just left a bad taste in my mouth." Zenith gave her a half-smile. "Thanks for not breaking any of these this time, by the way."

"Hey, you know last time wasn't my fault!" Oriella laughed. She flitted over and patted his shoulder. "I get it. Go get some sleep, it should help. Whatever you're working on can wait until tomorrow."

He glanced at the half-made weapon on his desk, thinking of how many deaths it would cause when it was finished, and hummed. "You're right. I will, thanks." She smiled and left the room, probably heading to the facility's showers. With a sigh, Zenith leaned back to look at the ceiling and fiddled with a pencil in one claw.

He'd pack a bag. Destroy his notes, and all of the gadgets he had made. With enough care, he would be able to cover his tracks and flee across the border to the fire plane. There, he could make a life for himself, away from all of this death and destruction.

With his mind made up, he got up to begin packing a bag. He would have to wait for the perfect moment to leave, but patience was one thing he excelled at. It was only a matter of time.
