It numbs my surroundings, fading them into meaningless nothing. It tells me of times of hardship, when the clay grows thick and drowns all those that had the misfortune of entering, and shows me visions of an aqueduct—no, The Aqueduct, the one that glistens with water to feed a thirsty clan. The unnatural Aqueduct, the one that steals water from the desert, the one that starves the Balutzos.
The Balutzos tells me that it is already hard to breathe, as clay could drown them if they close their mouth. But it is harder if there is no more clay to be found, the kind that beats through their heart, the kind that is formed by the very water The Aqueduct steals. It is a delicate cycle.
And with a mouth of glistening brown soil, and clay, and mud, it grins, it breathes, it listens. The clay—no, tar—puddles on the ground, pouring from its jaws. It laps at my neck, I am sinking. My helmet keeps me safe. They had warned me of the Balutzos’s gaze, they gave me the respirators as a precaution. It did not seem so necessary. The Balutzos radiated peace, and I could almost hear them shouting over the speaker in my ear, telling me to run, begging me to look away—oh, what did it matter? I had time.
It tells me the story of the water. How the water, in its natural form, feeds the geysers and hot springs of the Balutzos’s heart. How The Aqueduct disrupts this cycle, and dries the soil, turning fields of boiling clay into dry, cracked wasteland. It tells me the story of warring guardians—those that fight to serve the earth, those that fight to serve the water, or the ones of air and dust or fire and spark. Tells me that guardians fight only to balance or conquer, and never both. Tells me of guardians in between elements, or those who belong to none.
Well, which one are you? I ask.
It grins.
The respirators kick in, and I am submerged in this bubbling clay. Eight hours of oxygen, they told me, proud of their numbers. Unbreakable glass. Rebreathing systems to keep it going longer. You are safe, they promised, so sure, so proud.
It asks me what I have always wanted to see. I tell it that I’ve always dreamed of space. To find out what lies beyond, to see into the stars. It would be beautiful.
But of course, there is only earth down here. You cannot see the stars when you are bound to two separate realms; the earth to you is the sky to stars. Correct? The Balutzos says. I can show you the stars. But your suit, oh, that helmet. That’s not the right kind to travel so high, it would break. Take it off, and I will give you a new one.
The tar I am submerged in turns black, thickening, tightening. It is startling, at first, but I still see the Balutzos’s piercing eyes, and I am relieved. The black tar, pressed hard against the glass of my helmet, begins to sparkle. I see stars, so close, and so small, almost as if they were mere grains of sand. But they shine against the bright black, and swirl just like the Balutzos’s eyes. I could touch them. They are here, just for me.
We will travel the stars together, you and I. Swim my way, and we can go.
I hesitate. I would be leaving so much behind. The sand. The trees. The rain. The Aqueduct. The shouting in my ear. It seems so precious now, but a promising future awaits.
Come join me. Swim with me.
I take off my helmet.
