From the way Etesian acts, you'd almost think she doesn't want to be here. Quiet and solitary, she takes her duty as the clan's Wind representative very seriously (to be honest, she takes almost everything pretty seriously) and spends almost all of her time alone in the highest branches of the canopy, tending to her collection of wind chimes and colorful streamers tied to the trees where every breeze will tug at them. So why live here in the Viridian Labrynth? For two reasons. The one she tells people is that she wants a stronger relationship to her element than she could learn at home in the Windswept Plateau. If she was there, surrounded by the Wind charged magic currents all the time, where would the challenge be? Where the stretch, the need for growth? So instead she lives over here, learning the Wind's currents from far away, training herself to be stronger and stronger at drawing them into herself the same way you learn to strengthen your muscles by giving them heavier weights to lift. While all of that is true, it's not the whole truth. The thing Etesian keeps to herself is that her egg was found abandoned, and instead of hatching in a Wind nest like she ought to have, the first home she knew was the Starfall Isles. That's where she learned to push herself in order to achieve greater strength in her inner reserves of magic, but it wasn't a good fit for her as a permanent home. The Plateau has always called to her heart. ...Except, since she didn't hatch or grow up there, worry gnaws at her. What if she returned to the 'home' she's never known only to find that the dragons there looked down on her for having grown up elsewhere? What if it isn't all she dreams it is? What if she's somehow tainted or mixed in with Arcane magic from where she actually hatched? What if, what if? It's easier to stay here, and love the Wind from afar, and help the Wild Orchard clan learn from it. Maybe, one day, she'll gather up the inner strength to visit. Maybe. The Wind Spiral named Coriol is her closest friend and often something of a roommate- he's so devoted to the ideals of their element, trying to fill the sky with color and song the way Windsinger wanted when he created his children, how could Etesian not grow fond of him? Although they consider themselves to be friends or family and not a couple, the two of them occasionally use the advice of the nest mage Azili to create eggs through magic. It might be an odd way to bring children into the world, but the hope that they might one day find a Wind egg in the nest despite being in Nature makes the attempts worth it to Etesian. After all, what would be a surer sign that she really is fit to be a true Wind dragon, and pleasing to their father? |
