After a long life, it can be difficult to remember the minutae of the past. Animus, along with Undine, he began to develop magic that, while not exactly like a pearlcatcher's pearl, helps him to create physical manifestations of a dragon's memories.

There are other uses, of course, besides just recalling things you've forgotten due to age. Animus specializes in drawing out traumatic memories of the past in a sensitive way, and then speaking to their bearer to help them work through them. Of course, problems that aren't memory related are also something he can help with. He's a good listener.
