COMPANIONS:
z9VGk8R.png
▸ [NAME REDACTED]: Known as her owner, this human cared for Rita and treated her with the upmost respect. In her eyes, Rita was a best friend, a protector, and an equal worthy of everything she could give her

▸ Penny: Also known as Pen-Cat; Penny was a Norwegian Forest Cat mix who passed away only a few months before Rita. She was 19 at the time and died surrounded by her family. She is dearly missed and the house without her loud, howling cries seems so empty

▸ Gracie: A small, fluffy dog who is a mix of who-knows-what. She always seemed to be annoyed by Rita's presence and the love given to her, biting at her ears and barking happily when she got in trouble, but the two were as close as sisters. She seems a bit more fearful without her big sister to protect her

I don’t remember much about Rita from when we first got her. Of course, I was about 6 or 7 at the time, so what do you expect? After Rita passed away we were going through some old videos and photos of her on our family computer, just to laugh and distract us for a little while. My sister, as little kids do, was running around the house, filming away at everything she saw. The first person she went to was me and that’s when I realized that Rita had not always been my dog.

My sister called out, announcing her presence loudly, walking into my room and shoving what I assume to be my mom’s phone at the time right into my face. Before she came over me and my mom were watching the screen to see if we could catch any sighting of Rita, but the only dog there was our small white dog named Gracie. We looked at each other confused, but just sort of shrugged. Maybe she was just outside.

I yelled at my sister to leave, insisting my homework was much more important than her dumb video. She ran out and attached to the next person she could find, which was my mom making something in the kitchen. My mom and I looked again for Rita, but there was nothing. We paused the video, just confused as to why Rita was not with me or begging for her favorite thing, food, in the kitchen. We unpaused the video, as there was still about a minute left, so maybe Rita made an appearance in the end and heard my sister ask where the dogs were. My mom asked if they were both in my room and my sister responded, “Gracie is, but I can’t find Rita.” My mom responded with, “Check under my bed, maybe she’s there.”

My mom and I finished the video and Rita was nowhere to be found. We stared at each other, confused. My mom had told me before I didn’t love Rita like I did since I would say around 2016 or 2017, but I wouldn’t have ever thought Rita would hide under a bed. Here’s the thing you have to understand about Rita. She is a protective dog. She will stare out the window for long periods of time just to find something she can bark at. She growls at other dogs and will attack them if they get too close. She loved us so much she had to make sure we would never leave her. I couldn’t have ever imagined that dog hiding under a bed and not being out with us. Begging for food or stealing attention or looking for the next thing to protect us from.

We asked my dad about it and he apparently remembers her from when we first got her. He said Rita would do nothing but hide under the bed, scared to come out. I mean, I know that me and my sister were young and probably a real bother to her sometimes, but to be scared of us was something I wouldn’t have ever thought Rita could be. He said when the adoption agency dropped her off she just sat at the front door and cried for the lady who had been caring for her to come back. Rita did have attachment issues but she was never a wimp to me. She was always strong and I felt as safe as I could have been around her. To be so fearful and sad was not something I could comprehend for a while. I thought it about it for a pretty long time, though, and it made me feel really good, actually.

When we took Rita in she had come from an abusive situation. Her owner had locked her in his garage and just left her there. Day and night. We don’t know if she was ever beaten, but Rita has a large distaste for men, so I wouldn’t have put it past someone who could treat that sweet, loyal dog like that. Her being adopted when I was still so young I guess I just couldn’t remember that that’s how she had been. If you think about it a lot, though, you realize something. My family took a sad, scared, heart-broken dog and taught her to love again. We taught her patience and loyalty. We taught her what it feels like to be completely and totally loved. From my dad’s description of Rita in 2013 and my remembrance of her now, in 2020, it lit me up inside to know that we had changed that dog’s life. We had saved her.

God. That sounds really cheesy, doesn't it?
