Polaris

‘Twas my job to steer us to safety. Sitting high atop the mast in the nest. ‘‘Twas my duty as the eyes that gazed upon the horizon in search of ruins and Life.
I remember the day so clearly.
A cold breeze to soothe our aching scales, warm sun to fend off the chills that had since settled in the crews bones during the wintry nights. The chef, her name I cannot recall, had made a simple meal of desert flowers and skink. It was quite a pleasant day to be sailing across the sea of sand, soaring over the web of cables and cords that lay just beneath the surface, electricity crackling upwards.
Perhaps, had the day not been so pleasant. Had my mind not been at ease and my body relaxed.
Perhaps then, I might’ve been able to spot our impending doom.
My crew, none the wiser to our approaching end, had kept to their duties with a joyous tune on their hearts. I’m glad of that at the least. That they did not fall filled with fear.
Ignorance is bliss they say.
And while the living may need to remember. I pray that the dead remain ever ignorant.
