I always grew up hearing the dragons around me saying stuff like, “a beautiful girl should like beautiful things.” I grew up cursing my beauty. It was a curse in my eyes. All of my family was purple. Plain purple scales with plain purple markings, but not I. I was hatched with beautiful gold covering my scales. It was like an elegant filigree. Of course, that led to those around me thinking that I should be a princess or a dainty noblewoman. But I was hatched a banescale. I was hatched as the scourge of Sornieth. I would be damned if I didn’t live up to my true potential.

Despite the protests of my family, I enlisted to serve the Shadowbinder in the fight for dominance. It was incredibly hard at first. I hadn’t had much exposure to other dragons prior, so it was a shock to see imperials. They were all so massive. Even the hatchlings were nearly my size. I was assigned to be a foot soldier when I first arrived. I was honestly quite relieved that no one thought my beauty would better suit me to be a nurse or something like that.

I wasn’t relieved for long. Our enemies were ruthless. I was nearly killed in my first battle. My wings were torn to shreds. The joints were mangled and destroyed. I managed to drag myself out of the way of certain death by using my tail to push myself forward.

As I lay on my cot in the medhut, I was certain my military career was over. I was certain that I would be sent home. That is, until a strange being showed up. She wasn’t quite there. It seemed as though her body was made of mist and stardust. She told me that she could restore what was lost. She assured me that there were no strings attached. I believed her, because I had no other choice. The strange woman gave me some of her stardust and repaired my wings, but the stardust didn’t stop there. It spread across my body and became part of me.

That beings’s act of kindness led to me being able to continue my career. The stardust wings were faster than any other. I was unstoppable. With my new augments, I was able to quickly rise through the ranks. Within only a few short years, I reported directly to the Shadowbinder. I became a hero. They wrote poems and epics about me. I was exactly the kind of dragon everyone looked up to.

But every good story must come to an end. I grew weary of the constant battle. We fought day in and day out with no marked change. I eventually retired from my military career in favor of private mercenary work. I still fight, but at least I now know that I’m making an impact.
