Acolyte
Devout | Clever | Anxious

Valia was expressive if one knew what to look for. While her face remained blank, her wide and glowing eyes unblinking, there were smaller signs that she was feeling emotion. The crests atop her head might flutter, the tip of her tail might flick back and forth, and perhaps she'd let out a heavy breath through her nostrils that was barely audible. It was difficult for her to express herself as there was a storm of confusion in her mind. Her own origin was a mystery and it troubled her so deeply that she tended to be aloof and lost in thought while the world continued around her. She grew self-conscious of herself as it was frowned upon to be so spacey as an Acolyte of her cold and calculated deity.

Luckily, her good friend knew how to shake her out of these moments. The other Fae descended to her, clad in her all-black armor and yet somehow still landing lightly on the ground beside Valia. Nida nudged her shoulder, flashing her a curious glance. Their separate pairs of strange eyes met, Nida with her horizontal pupils reminiscent of a goat's and Valia's glowing with the power of the Shadowbinder's blessing. Where most dragons would have offered a grin, instead the crest atop Valia's head fluttered slightly in the only indication of an emotion. Nida grinned for her, recognizing the signs well enough to know her friend was acknowledging her with warmth even while glowing shadowy eyes vacantly stared right through her.

"Are you lost in thought again, Valia?" The low, smooth voice soothed the Shadow Acolyte and she relaxed, curling her long tail around her feet a few times as she settled upon the cool grassy clearing.

"No, certainly not." Valia insisted, wringing her hands nervously. Usually she had a spear in hand, one gifted to her by her warrior friend and that kept her from practicing such a nervous gesture but it was hooked onto her back as she had been preparing for flight. Moments before she took off she had gotten struck with distressing anxiety over her memories once again. She wasn't even sure how long she had been sitting there in the twilight-speckled forest before Nida came along. "I was just leaving actually." She insisted, her voice as even as her expression.

Nida circled her, crawling around with her wings tucked back as she gave Valia a good once-over. "Where are you off to? You ought to stay in with me tonight and make that sweet nectar drink again." She declared. It sounded far more pushy than it actually was. Valia was clearly in no state to take flight without getting distracted again and quite possibly hurting herself. Or maybe Nida was overbearing, it was hard to say. Either way, Nida's large frilled ears could pick up on her racing heartbeat which indicating that something was clearly wrong.

Valia attempted to protest but Nida swept her away to their home which they shared. They had taken up residence in a large tree, one with crooked branches and dark wood. The leaves were deep shades of blue, looking completely at home in the dark forest. Neither of the Fae were home often as Valia made it her mission to spread the word about her beloved deity. Often she could be found calling out to people in nearby settlements, trying to get them to lend an ear to her cause. It was a futile attempt in most cases but she was adamant. After all, the Shadowbinder gave her a purpose when she was lost and that was a gift she felt she could never repay. Thus she was at the Shadowbinder's beck and call, always willing to do anything in an effort to lessen her guilt and express her never-ending gratitude.

The outstretched branches of the shaded tree greeted the pair. Upon one of the branches sat a Charoite Burrower, Valia's only other friend besides Nida. The owl, who went by Aura, was about as charming as her master was. She welcomed the pair with a soft hoot before ruffling her feathers. 'Shirking your duties again?' The voice drifted through the air with seemingly no source but the duo recognized the voice as Aura's. She spoke to them from the branches without opening her beak.

"I wouldn't call it that, I've been very productive, I promise." Valia responded, her voice didn't betray her nerves but her ears tilted back in obvious distress. Nida urged her along, flashing a glare toward the crystal-adorned bird.

"You don't have to justify yourself to her. Isn't she your assistant?" Nida pointed out with a sigh. Valia supposed that was true but the owl was just so good at keeping her in check. Like a secretary of sorts, digging Valia out of her own head in a different way than how Nida did it and putting her to work. Aura was also a follower of the Shadowbinder, in fact she had been assigned to help Valia with her training and simply couldn't leave the Fae to her own devices even after the training was complete.

'More like a teacher I'd say.' Aura called out after them but the two Fae ducked into a hole in the base of the tree, ignoring her. The inside of the dark oak was hollowed out to accommodate them. There was a hole leading out onto a few of the higher branches so they had several means of exiting their home. It was cozy and open, their beds shoved up next to each other against one side while their kitchenette was against the opposite one. A long table stretched through the middle of the room, set with clean dishes and awaiting their next meal. Baskets of fruit and vegetables lie around, near-empty as it was close to time to gather more or head to the marketplace if there was nothing to forage.

Luckily there was one last peach for the 'nectar' drink that Nida so desperately wanted. "I could teach you how to make this yourself, you know?" Valia offered as she scampered over to the basket and pulled out a peach that was nearly the size of her body. She plopped it onto the counter with a huff, pushing her hood back to avoid getting it mess during the juicing process.

"It won't taste as good if I do it." Nida countered, climbing into one of the chairs around the table. It was less a desire to be lazy and more of a way to keep Valia's brain out of that spiral it normally found itself in. The shadow Acolyte didn't seem to mind, getting to work and dedicating herself to the task as she always did no matter how big or small it seemed. Valia treated it with the utmost importance and grew fiercely determined to do it correctly and efficiently. Surprisingly enough, she knew how to cook, it was something that didn't seem to leave her the way her memories did. Like instinct, Valia knew exactly how to use the utensils and ingredients. But juice was simple and Nida loved it so much so the Acolyte found herself once again juicing peaches for their sweetness.

Filling a wooden cup to the brim, she paused to wipe her paws off on a washcloth hanging on one of the drawers. Then she turned away, taking the cup with her as she hurried back to Nida and presented it to her. "Want to share it?" Nida questioned as she took the cup in-hand.

"You know I don't like sweet things." Valia pointed out plainly. Nida took a long sip of the drink before setting the cup down and saying the first thing that came to mind.

"But you like me." Nida stated. They both froze, a long stretch of silence extending between them. Flustered, Nida tried to think of something to say but Valia was already pulling her hood up over her head to hide her blush.

"I have work to do, enjoy your drink." The shadow Fae stated before scrambling away. Aura just watched from the branches as Valia fled the scene, rushing to bury herself in her job of informing people about her beloved Shadowbinder. She was a very busy Fae and it had nothing at all to do with what Nida had said.
