Biography

LESION - Acolyte of Raziel

Venomblade Hilt Sunbeam Soldier Condor's Breastplate

He is a sinner remade in Raziel’s light, and that is the greatest gift that he could dream of.

Sometimes it is hard to imagine those days spent wandering through the Sea of a Thousand Currents, always adrift with the tide, never bound to any one purpose. Other times, Lesion recalls all too well his days as a nautical mercenary, a hired sword sailing over Sornieth to do someone else’s bidding. Anyone else’s really, so long as it kept him from drowning in the dark. Back then, his heart held such base desires.

Now, though, he is blessed with fresh purpose under Raziel’s benevolent eye.

Raziel insists that he is not a saint. He is merely a servant of the Lightweaver, devout and pleasant according to her whims. But he took mercy on the shipwrecked heathen Lesion once was, and guided him through the dangers of the Starfall Isles in order to offer him a home and a second chance. Is that not the workings of a saint?

Looking up at Raziel on that beach, with the sun streaming from behind him, with that golden glow all around, Lesion thought he had died for a moment, that judgment was fast upon him. Now, he knows he looked into the face of mercy and patience, and he owes that face his life.

To repay that debt, which he is almost certain can never be repaid, Lesion became a knight and an acolyte both. With fresh dedication in his heart, he took up the sword and the Lightweaver’s banner, and pledged himself to the kingdom that Raziel called home. In truth, it is more of a pledge to Raziel; should the Lightweaver’s disciple depart this kingdom, Lesion will surely follow; he swore his oaths to a crown, yes, but his heart swore them to the dragon that saved him. Should his loyalty be tested, he already knows what his answer will be.

Thankfully, that does not appear to be a pressing question. Raziel appears quite comfortable where he is at, conducting his work in the surrounding locales with a bright enthusiasm. Lesion often accompanies him on his trips into the Starfall Isles, making sure that Raziel is never without a loyal sword to defend him. And on these excursions, sometimes Raziel even deigns to teach Lesion minor magics, walking him through the finer points of his less physical talents.

Lesion will never be a mage, sworn as he is to the sword, and lacking in true magical prowess, but these lessons hold a special place in his heart. For all too short hours at a time, Raziel’s benevolence is focused entirely on him, and it is a feeling unlike any other. His praise sets a fire deep in Lesion’s bones, a passion that urges him to impress his savior, and his critique is so thoughtful, so gentle, that it feels almost warm rather than sharp.

Jin tells Lesion time and again that those feelings are called infatuation, saying it with all the gravity of a fully anointed sage. Lesion tries not to dwell on it too much. Infatuation is the sailors he has spent his nights with, the long nights in seedy taverns, the rushed mornings before the whole port comes to life. What he shares with Raziel is not even shared. It is devotion, flung forward with the full force of his heart. No, it is not infatuation, no matter what Jin observes, wise though he may often be.

But sometimes, when Raziel is away with another knight at his side, and Lesion remains in the kingdom to offer his services as knight and acolyte alike, he wonders about his savior. Why take in a salt-drenched wretch like himself? Why offer him a chance at redemption when the kingdom is full of ready faithful?

(Jin is curiously silent on this particular topic. The word “redemption” alone makes him prickle and withdraw, Lesion has noticed. He leaves it out of their conversations these days.)

Maybe, though, it is best not to question the inner workings of someone so close to the divine. Why give Raziel a reason to push Lesion into the arms of another ambassador, one more attuned to his home element? Worse, why give him a reason to cast Lesion back into the cold embrace of the sea? No, Lesion will remain steadfast, just as he has sworn. This life gives him purpose, gives him something to defend and something to cherish. He knows what his days hold so long as he remains true, and perhaps at the end of it all, some higher power will look down upon him with love and approval.

This is a second chance, one Lesion never dreamed he might deserved. He will not waste a single moment of it on hesitation or doubt.

Acolyte of Raziel, Loyal protector, Heroic Warrior.

"His light magic shines brightly, the warmth touching all, yet he feels so cold."

Lapis speaks to him, or to a third party perhaps.

"What does this mean, seer?"

"What do you think it means?"

The wildclaw says nothing.

He thinks he knows too much.
