The Gaoler grinned wickedly in the darkness, the dim moonlight glinting off of razor-sharp fangs. The thrill of the hunt coursed through her veins and she leapt from her hiding place, startling the flock of gulls sleeping on the rocky shoreline. Most of the flock escaped into the air, calling loudly to one another in alarm, but not before Spearmint had snatched one of the slower ones securely in her jaws. She perched on her favorite rock; a particularly precarious crag that jutted out over the water below, and proceeded to devour her dinner with ferocity.

Ever since she’d been abandoned by her parents, Spearmint had found that she adjusted well to a life of solitude. As the eldest sister to two younger siblings, Spearmint had always been tasked with taking care of them, making sure they stayed out of trouble, and had enough food. Now that they were all grown; however, Spearmint finally had the freedom she craved, a freedom that she hoped her mother would never know. The female still bore resentment towards the goddess that had brought her into this world: a poor excuse for a mother in Spearmint’s opinion. But now she was finally on her own-- no extra mouths to feed, no responsibility to anyone but herself.

Spearmint inhaled the cool night air, a light mist from the ocean below forming droplets on her thick fur coat. Yes, this was the life for her.
