CYPHA
THE MORTICIAN
___________
62767994.png
▬▬ ABOUT ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

An immortal mortician with a fascination of death. Ever since they learned that they could not die, death has felt like a distant, unknowable concept to Cypha. They don't desire death, but they want to understand it. What is this mysterious, inevitable force that so many seem to fear? What was it like to live everyday knowing that someday, it will all come to an end? Cypha likely won't be able to answer their questions themself, but that doesn't mean that they'll never find the answer.

As a mortician, Cypha can learn how death affects the families of the deceased. Hearing stories day in and day out about others' loved ones passed away would be difficult to deal with for many dragons, but Cypha finds them genuinely interesting. They are sad, but fascinating in a strange way.

Perhaps this is the closest to death that Cypha will ever get; observing it through the stories and sorrows of other people.

▬▬ ORIGIN ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Thanks to a fatal accident when they were a hatchling, Cypha discovered that they are immortal. A surprising revelation for sure, but Cypha (and their parents) were more relieved with the fact that the spiral hadn't been born with a more destructive ability.

But as Cypha grew up, their immortality started to make them curious. What was it like to fear death? Cypha had discovered their immortality as a young hatchling. Old enough to vaguely know what death is, but not enough to fully comprehend what it really is. Thus, the spiral had never truly feared death. This lack of fear, though did not create a lack of curiosity.

Cypha became a mortician to try and answer their questions. Perhaps, in honoring the deceased and listening to the stories of their loved ones, they could come to understand this alien concept?

▬▬ NOTES ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

» wonders how their perception of death will change if a loved one ever dies

» is a fairly young immortal (as in a mortal dragon their age is not at risk of dying of old age)

» has a very poor work-life balance; spends nearly every waking moment in their office, and will pass out without warning on occasion

» Cypha does not like the sight of blood not because they associate it with death, but rather because they associate it with pain

ABOUT (CONT.)
[ WRITTEN BY SHANNCRAFTER
]

Children of the reality warper and the walking anti-magic tend to find that they have less of a physical form than most dragons. Some are walking concepts, some are more lightning storm than flesh and blood, and some simply do not exist altogether-- well, not in this realm, anyway.

There is, of course, the risk that with every ‘hatchling’ that emerges from the shell, the universe might rip itself apart. It’s a small chance, but there nonetheless, and besides, they may well set the apocalypse into motion in their adulthood anyway.

That is, if they survive that long.

-

For a long time, Cypha's parents thought they'd gotten lucky when Cypha displayed no signs of otherworldly magic or tremendous power.

That is, till they wandered a little too far from their home clan and off the edge of a cliff.

Cypha was a hatchling when it happened. They still have the scar to prove it-- a five-inch long gash across the back of their head. It should have killed them, but on that day, they discovered that they did indeed inherit some form of their parents' unstable blend of magic: they could not die.

What is a dragon to do with this sort of power? A grifter might use it to pull scams, maybe insurance fraud. A warrior would boast it in combat, living on in tales of their greatness. Perhaps a zealot might use it to seek out the deities. Whatever fate lies in wait, only greatness can come of it.

Although, a caveat: just because they cannot die does not mean they cannot feel pain.

Rather than wielding their immortality as a weapon or tool, Cypha chose to ponder the questions that came with it. Ever since they learned of their ability, death has felt like all but a distant, bewildering concept. While they do not desire it, Cypha wishes to comprehend death as well as everything associated with it. What was it like to fear death? What was it like to live each day knowing that it will all come to an end? What was it like to know that one's memory will eventually be lost to time? Cypha could not answer these questions themself, but perhaps others could.

In their fascination with death, the spiral became a mortician. The closest that they were ever going to get to understanding death would be to observe the whole thing; not only the deceased dragon themself, but how their death affected the people around them. Day after day, Cypha is visited by dragons who have come to arrange funerals for their loved ones. The grief and emptiness that they often bear on their faces is a sad yet completely alien expression to the spiral; they can tell that, in their mourning, they fear death too.

There are many days when Cypha sits in their office, rubbing the scar on the back of their head. The searing pain had dulled into nothing over the course of the past few years, but they can still remember the injury all too well. Had they truly feared death in that moment when they fell off a cliff all those years ago? Would their parents be mourning their death had they not been immortal, just like their clients? Cypha was not sure.

Is the spiral's immortality is a blessing or a curse? To be honest, they feel as if they've only really traded one problem for another. The spiral won't live fearing death, but living indefinitely means that they also have an indefinite amount of time to change. Who knows what could happen in the future? They could be a hero and a villain in the same life. They could destroy the world and rebuild it again, grow to love it and then come to despise it. Their mind could turn on them, bringing them to insanity after having to suffer through countless years of being alive. But they could just as easily become enlightened, understanding the world in its entirety. The thing is, if Cypha ends up living a really, really long time, all of those things could happen in the same life time.

Perhaps being immortal is a way to understand death in of itself; Cypha will see for themself what will happen if death never comes for them.
