Biography
|
Andalusite was once a dedicated researcher of Miskatonic University, spending countless hours in the restricted basement. She largely specialized in artifacts and creatures brought back, but very rarely suited up to venture into the portal herself.
___For years on end she was a constant, well-known presence in the research base, heeded for her level head, rationality, and dedicated pursuit of whatever project she had thrown herself into at the time. Notably, unlike the majority of other Guardians at the university, she had found no charge; her colleagues' teasing that her work itself was her charge was largely brushed off with a laugh. After a particularly risky solo expedition out into uncharted terrain on the other side, she came back... odd. Gone was her usual calm, steady demeanor; the Andalusite who returned was frazzled, twitchy, and near-manic, having latched onto something she found out there. A few days' time did nothing to help her condition; she only degraded, with her worsening mental state accompanied by subtle, unsettling physical changes—feathery growths on the shoulders and spine, jagged crystalline spikes sprouting on her horns. An unblinking, hovering eye taking the place of her Arcane emblem. They never quite figured out exactly what she had found out there—another portal? some kind of... structure? no one could decipher what her raving was even about—before she bolted, ignoring the concern and desperate protests of her friends and fleeing over the sea, her flight assisted by the growth of monstrous new wings. Despite months—years—of searching, she hasn't been seen since. Expeditions near a particularly warped area through the portal have reported what looks like a lone Guardian dragon in the area—but that region is far, far too dangerous and irradiated for any dragon to survive there, they always say. Any normal dragon. |

Last confirmed appearance, recorded by the scholars of the Crashing Isles.
The Crashing Isles are a region in Arcane territory, characterized by multitudes of free-roaming floating islands drifting over(and occasionally into) the ocean, the meandering paths of which are utterly unpredictable and have boggled the most dedicated local scholars for decades now. Close to the mainland, the region is fairly unremarkable, about as mundanely bizarre as the rest of the Starfall Isles; however, the further north one gets, the stranger the Crashing Isles become.
Unstable leylines course through the water and air here, warping the already erratic islands to the point where full-on teleporting islands isn't an uncommon sight. Erratic bursts of magic make the area incredibly dangerous for dragons, and some of the farthest-reaching expeditions report strange, aberrant gateways spontaneously tearing open and shutting again with just as little warning.
The few stable, mundane oceanic islands have become key for the creation of outposts in the warping sea, and a thriving community of scholars and explorers has sprung up, united by the goal to understand these islands and discover their secrets.
