The grieving dragon

★★★ Story/universe lore: Those Who Dwell
Having been mistaken for a Demon, Daybreak was killed by their lover, Anna who had no choice other than to prevent them from facing a crueler death. While Anna mourned, Daybreak had come back wrought with grief, betrayal, and anger under a new name: Nightfall. Still a dragon but now one associated with pestilence, their emotions are no longer like the happy and easygoing Daybreak's, instead now being replaced with wrath and sorrow. Frailer, pale, having shed off their gems, Nightfall's new domain reflects through their altered physique.

★★★ PERSONALITY
Withdrawn, ruthless. Nightfall's apprehension towards others is partially out of the pain they remembered feeling as well as the emotions that riddled their chest at the time of their death, but also from having once more lost their memories. Their emotions are contagious, with everywhere that they go Mortals are sapped of enjoyment and feel lethargic for several days, while smaller lives around them wither and become wrought with illness. The unavoidable misery surrounding Nightfall only invites a spiralling cascade of despair on top of their already poor state. Somehow, they retained their value of life, appreciating the way a flower bloomed in the morning or the way a child smiled upon being given a lolly, which only acts to taunt Nightfall's emotions more.

★★★ HISTORY

As Nightfall, they still have no intent nor desire to harm others - it is merely a product of what they have become now and of their domain of pestilence and grief. Because their very presence clashes with that exact value of theirs, it only drives Nightfall into a cycle of rejection of others and the self, letting themselves become cold and distant. With no memory of anyone, and only Raven by their side to be unaffected of their contagious features, the loneliness only continues to eat away at them.

Anna, wrecked with guilt decides to face Nightfall once she realises they're alive despite Ada and Raven's protests. When she arrived at Nightfall's domain, she is met with sharp, red, wrathful eyes that nearly turn her away. With the intention to at least bury the hatchet and tie loose ends, she explains to Nightfall who they were originally, that they once brought joy and love to the lives around them. She explains what the two of them once had, and that she was the one who killed him, for the sake of avoiding an inevitably worse death. Anna vowed that this time, she would actually protect Nightfall, even if it made her miserable. Unable to live with the idea that they actually at some point didn't bring despair to those around them, and unable to process that the reason for their overwhelming feelings of grief was from the situation between them and Anna, Nightfall screamed in agony. But unable to face the fact that despite all of this, Anna was still willing to stay by their side and risk a miserable life, Nightfall lashed out at her verbally, breaking what little hope Anna had left. She left Nightfall's domain and so did Raven, leaving a lonely - and scared - little dragon.

It didn't take long before Anna found out that she had been followed by her family, and that she accidentally led them to Nightfall's home. This time furious, relentless, and determined to eliminate Nightfall from the face of the Earth, they storm in, 6 Demon Hunters against a powerful dragon of pestilence. Irritated by Anna's "incompetence" and "failure to uphold her duty", her mother strikes her face, almost knocking her out. Keeping their virtue of not harming Mortals, Nightfall keeps a purely defensive stance in the fight, letting the Hunters destroy everything in the vicinity until Anna intervenes.

Still tied to her vow, Anna promises to fulfill her role as Nightfall's protector and acts on it. She faces her family alone, ignoring Nightfall's pleads and forces them to stand aside. Despite being outnumbered and with little skill in combat in comparison to her family, the Essence she developed while having spent time with Daybreak proved to be a strong barrier to overcome the odds. In their defeat, she disowns them, as well as drops the title of Demon Hunter. She proclaims with honour that she has found a much kinder and stronger family, driving her relatives out of Nightfall's domain.

In the aftermath, Nightfall runs to Anna's side, noticing the redness on her cheek from having been struck earlier. They reach for her skin but the hand retracts, afraid of what their touch would do. Nightfall admits now that they trust Anna's words, but still doesn't want to commit to any close ties with her, which Anna understands and smiles to. She appoints herself as Nightfall's guard to which they accept reluctantly, and the two slowly begin to become close once again. In the process Nightfall reveals to Anna that they are a dragon originally among the Celestials, not a Demon. They told her that they were grateful that they trusted them despite thinking so.

Under the moonlight one night, Nightfall plucks an orchid flower and sticks it into Anna's hair, for the first time in this incarnation smiling with their characteristically silly smile. Unable to hold back her tears, Anna hugs Nightfall and weeps into their chest, surprising them. When they ask if their presence made Anna miserable, she replied, "No, you make me happy. As you always have."

Even though Nightfall no longer remembered the times they spent before, they still, of course, remember how they felt at the time of their death - including love.
