Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Alma
Alma is the reason Sargent hired Brix as a permanent crew member.
Even though Absolem's magical talents are considerable, he's far too in-tune with the physical world and the actual body of The Ichor to be of much help in removing spirits. And yet, time after time, the ghost of Chiaroscuro's pirate airship refused to give in to Brix's wheedling.
As it turned out, Brix didn't need to coax the spirit out at all. After Gazario almost sent the ship hurtling to the ground upon his entrance to the clan's borders, we were all gifted with another surprise when Alma floated out of the woodwork, fixing everyone around with a hard look before looking at the one who'd caused all the ruckus and vanishing again.
Since then, Alma comes out to observe The Ichor's crew often. Sometimes she appears on Brix's back when he's not expecting it, sitting quietly as the twins try and rope her into their games or Jericho ties another one of Akeno's light explosives to the mast. Brix tells me she's still very interested in Gazario, but gives him a wide berth. And surprisingly enough, aside from Brix, she enjoys Sargent's company the most, followed closely by Reid.
All the information I have about Alma comes solely from Brix, since he's the only one who can speak to her. Being able to talk to the dead has perks, I suppose. The rest of the crew doesn't seem to mind their silent little ghost, and the twins in particular like to have Alma try to pick things up and make them look like they're floating around the ship by themselves. Sargent is still a little bit annoyed that her ship is haunted, but has begrudgingly accepted Alma, maybe because they're both undead in a way.
Brix hasn't told me much about Alma's past; he says that Alma remembers most of her old life, but not exactly how she died for some reason. She only remembers waking up and being alone with the ship, unable to leave. There are maybe some dragons in Chiaroscuro who could find out (Kendra, Casado, maybe even Brix? Gazario?), but Alma's not exactly a restless spirit. She just kind of inhabits the ship, being a silent watcher who has yet to find her exact place among a crew whose lives she probably knows more about than they will ever realize. She's... content.
I can feel Alma observing me when I approach The Ichor now, and she's one of the dragons in the clan I wish more than anything I could have a long, deep conversation with. I want to know how she lived and why an airship was where her soul decided to lay itself to rest. I want to know why Gazario was the catalyst to her appearance in the clan's lives, and I'd love to see if she's actually as eccentric as the rest of the dragons that live around her. But mostly, I want to know how long she's able to stay, and if she'd like to pass on, even if she enjoys her life here.
I want to know if she and Brix have talked about how Brix is definitely falling for her, and how he will be a little more broken if she ends up leaving without a trace.
Is she falling too? Is it more cruel to find love after death if that love is true in a way that makes you feel alive? Does Brix even know how he feels for her or is it something he represses because a little voice inside him says it's a dream he can never attain?
Is it better to be oblivious? I thought I was certain that the inevitable pain of loving someone was worth it, but does that change if one party is already dead, just not gone?
