______ Lumi lives with his father on a snowy mountain next to the ocean. During the summer they take a sum of what his father has earned over the past few months to go live with Lumi's mother and little sister, who are both flame dragons. Lumi adores his little sister. They usually spend four to five months at the mother's home before heading back up to the mountain home again.
______ When Lumi tries to use too much magic at once, he loses control of it. In the summer, these outbursts of magical power usually only drop the temperature of the area around him by ten to twenty degrees. In the winter, they cause mini snowstorms that freeze every non- living thing in its path. Other than his mother's job, this is the main reason why Lumi and his father stay seperated from the rest of the family during the winter. The outbursts themselves are rare, but when they happen they cause a lot of damage. Lumi's father took him to the mountains because he believes that Lumi will learn how to control his powers better if he is around his own element. So far, his theory is working. Once Lumi gains full control of his abilities, the family is going to reunite in his mother's home.
______ Lumi's favorite food is fish chowder. He enjoys watching the seals at the bottom of the cliff jump in and out of the water. He has a photo album of different types of animals he photographs around his home.

Lumi
Lumi stared down the side of the snowy cliff, waiting. Little flakes of powder snow drifted onto his white hair. He'd been there for so long, a little dusting had formed on top of him. Lumi's legs swayed back and forth over the side of the cliff, keeping the snow from settling on his pants. He glanced backwards, towards a little cottage. Smoke billowed invitingly from the chimney; it was always warm inside. He liked the cold. He turned his attention back to the bottom of the cliff. A large leopard seal was lounging about, lazily eating a fish. It must be nice to not have to worry about drowning, Lumi thought, observing the seal's large fins. or falling down... He scooted back a bit from the edge, legs still dangling. The leopard seal rolled itself back into the water, leaving the fish carcass behind.

Suddenly, the loud crunching of footsteps in the snow broke the peaceful silence of the day. In a large woolen jacket came a man with snow white hair and blue eyes just like his. It was his father, Whittaker. He stared directly into Lumi's eyes. "Lumi," he began solemnly. "Are you sure you don't want to wait another week? Open air flying is a lot different than lifting off the ground." Lumi looked from his father, to the bottom of the cliff, and then to his father again. He nodded hesitantly. Whittaker looked down towards the bottom of the cliff.
"Alright." he murmured.
Suddenly, his father's human hands turned to claws and antler-like horns grew from his head. In a matter of seconds he had grown from a normal human to an enormous dragon, standing over Lumi. He was sixty feet long, with skin that blended in with the mountain. He kept his wings folded, and his head lifted high. He looked regal.
"Your turn." he said, making himself comfortable in the snow beside Lumi. It usually took him a while to transform. Alright... Lumi thought.
Lumi concentrated hard. If he tried to transform too quickly, he could lose control of his magic and cause a raging snowstorm. If he didn't use enough of his power, nothing would happen at all. It took fifteen minutes to fully transform. His leathery wings felt strange after being unused for the past few days. Two little black antlers poked through his head. They hadn't been there before. "That was a lot faster than last time, Lumi!" Whittaker exclaimed proudly. He looked to the cliff.
"You remember what I taught you?"
Lumi nodded
"Good. I'm going to wait at the bottom. If you fall, I'll catch you, ok?"
"Ok."

A pit formed in Lumi's stomach as he watched his father gracefully glide onto the ice at the bottom of the cliff. Now that he was about to dive off, staring over the edge of a cliff wasn't so nice anymore. Seeing his father glide down made him realize how huge the drop was. Sixty, maybe seventy feet of open air above a thick slab of ice. Images of splatting on the ground drifted into his brain. Hitting the ground... The ice cracks open... Falling into the ocean to never be seen again... Never to be seen again...
"Lumi! Are you ok?" his father shouted. Lumi hadn't realized how long he'd been staring down. His father jumped up and reached to the top of the cliff with his legs and tail still on the ground. "Lumi, you don't have to do this yet. If you're scared we can just go back inside. Most dragons don't even learn to fly until they're a bit older anyway."
"I-" Lumi stared down the cliff again. Do I want to do this...? "I just..."
"Its ok," his father said, nudging Lumi away from the cliff. "Lets just go inside. I don't want to pressure you into doing something you don't want to. Let's do some more training, and we can try again next week-"

"I want to fly."

His father looked apprehensive.

"L-let me try again." Lumi stammered, forcing the words out. I want to fly. I'm not going to be scared.
The mountain became silent as Whittaker mulled over what he was hearing."Okay." he breathed. He slunk down to the bottom of the cliff, and waited to catch his son. Lumi went back to the edge and looked over. Taking a shaky breath, he spread his wings, giving them a good stretch. He backed up a few feet. He closed his eyes and charged, springing right off of the edge. He caught the air in his wings and began to glide. "Lumi! Flap your wings!" Whittaker called, weaving himself around to stay under Lumi.
Easier said than done. With a first flap Lumi plummeted, dropping ten feet before he had the chance to correct himself. His father let out a yelp before springing up to catch him. Lumi cried out and flailed his wings to get them straight, flapping as hard as he could. He twisted and turned in mid-air. He dropped ten feet, twenty, thirty...

Then suddenly, just before he was about to land in his father's outstretched paws, he caught an updraft, spread his wings, and flapped as hard as he could. He shot up with the draft, rising up ten feet. Steadying himself, he moved forward in the air. "L-Lumi! You're doing it!" his father exclaimed in surprise. Lumi didn't notice, though. He was so focused on staying airborne that he had blocked everything out. He was so focused on staying in the air that he didn't notice that he was heading straight for the mountain. Lumi smacked muzzle-first into the side of the cliff. Everything went black as he dropped.

Lumi woke up in human form. Blinking away the disorientation, he realized that he was inside. His entire body was sore. His nose hurt the most; it felt like it had been stuffed with petroleum jelly, the kind of stuff you use to keep your nose from chapping after a nosebleed. The container in use sat on the coffee table across from him next to a box of q-tips, gauze, medical tape, and ointment. The fire in the living room had just been fed, and it was currently being used to dry the clothing Lumi had worn outside today. He lifted a heavy woolen blanket off of him to find that he was wearing pajamas. He re-positioned the blanket on top of himself and carefully turned on his side to look out the windows. It was dark. Powder snow fluttered down to the ground, creating a thick blanket. How long have I been asleep? Lumi wondered.

He didn't have much time to think about it, though, because his father came in through the door with a hot bowl of chowder in each hand. He passed one to Lumi before plopping himself down on the floor in front of the couch. "That was quite a crash you had there!" he began as he dug into the chowder. "I was worried that you had broken your nose for a while. Luckily, it was only bleeding." He looked up from his bowl. "You did a good job, catching yourself. I'm proud of you." He took a large bite of chowder before looking back to his son.

"Lumi, aren't you going to eat your dinner?"

Lumi looked down at his bowl and realized how hungry he was. "Oh, right. Thanks!" He chowed down. Whittaker chuckled. He put his now-empty bowl on the table and stretched himself out on the floor. Lumi finished his bowl and looked into the bright flames.

They spent a while chatting before Whittaker started to get drowsy. He got up, taking his and Lumi's empty bowls.
"You should take it easy for the next few days. Get some rest." He said as he placed the bowls in the kitchen sink.
"Alright." Lumi turned over carefully and pulled up the blanket. His father walked over and poked the fire before tossing another log in. He tousled Lumi's hair as he walked away to his bedroom.
Lumi drifted off to sleep.
