Having spent a month with no name and no options in his birth clan Nikolas was put up for auction. When Elmissa saw him she became interested in first his capabilities as a fighter which were acceptable. However, eager to please, he took to bringing her trinkets and other items of value for her to use or sell as she pleased. Before long she began to see him as a potential mate and Nikolas found his heart answering in kind. For a time they were happy or at least, he presumed they were.

Elmissa grew restless and knowing he could not claim her, he allowed her to leave him. His heart was not left in shambles as another's might be, for he had two daughters to love and adore. He focused on their upbringing in the clan and taught them all he knew.

However after a time his eldest daughter too grew uneasy. She often went to Almeria for counsel and would shun his presence. After a trip to the Shattering Expanse she returned and announced herself ready to leave for her final journey. She wished to go to the Icewarden. Nikolas argued with her, hoping sense would come to her but it did not come.

She left and in his grief he turned to Almeria for comfort. The wise healer and he grew intimate and three brightly colored offspring were produced. All of which were sent away as gifts to clans far off in the world. There are moments when the pain of their departure stings at his heart but then he remembers Laena, his eldest daughter who had gone first and he knows she is waiting for their arrival.

Years passed before he took another mate. He was battle-worn but hopeful of his new love when she came along. Charlotte arrived with the other Nocturnes, during the end of the twelfth month. Her eyes were of a molten gold and he was lost to her.
