Biography

Hywl isn’t exactly sure what the strange pale Spiral means when she says she needs him to help her take revenge on her father. He is terrified at first: What if she’s going to lead him into a war? Hywl has never fought anyone before, unless you count Yoro, but that was only over a coconut. Coconut tastes much better than seaweed...

What was he saying again? Oh, right. War is very, very bad, and he wants no part of it. So why is he following Legacy and putting his trust in a Spiral he’s never met before? Her scent is unfamiliar, so she’s not some distant Shadow cousin from across the Sea. And why is she so angry? He can smell the swirling emotions in the wake of her flight. Fear, worry, sadness, and determination mingle together with the rage too, mixing in a scent that had no place invading Hywl’s sensitive nostrils. He can’t figure her out. He’s never felt or smelled ire and loss and stubbornness together, all three at the same time. They’re conflicting in their nature. To be fair, though, he’s only a Water dragon who’s never left the Sea. Who knows what kind of weird things go down in the Tangled Wood.

He shakes his head and clears his throat, shouting to be heard above the wind. “Legacy? ...Why are we going to the Ashfall Waste? Can’t we just stay here, where it’s safe?” And familiar, he adds privately.

She sighs. “If my father suspects that I survived the swim, the first place he’ll look is the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He’ll take me back to the Tangled Wood and string me up for the night creatures. Provably take you with me, if we’re found together. He’ll assume correctly that I told the first dragon I met about my predicament. Trumalen likes to keep loose ends nice and tidy.” She says it with little emotion, as if she is remarking about the weather instead of deadly family drama.

Hywl nearly falls out of the sky with shock and fear. “He-he’ll what?”

“Hang us up on a tree, pinned by our wings like butterflies. At the mercy of the wildest things that creep and crawl in my old home. A dragon straying from their lair has fallen prey to them before. It will look like an accident, just a couple of foolish dragons who should have known better.” Cold, detached, and just a little clipped. So now he is a part of her life. Her freedoms and her punishments are intertwined with his now, it seems.

“But... why? Why would your father want to kill you?” This part of the story still isn’t clear to him.

Legacy points to an isolated strip of sand, grey from volcanic activity. They are getting closer to the Emberglow Hearth. “Let’s rest here for a minute, and I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”

She lands tentatively on the gritty sand and glances back in the direction of the Tangled Wood, although with a whole other domain between them, it’s impossible to spot it. The ground is scorching hot on Hywl’s paws from all the sunlight it’s absorbed. He hops from one foot to the other and watches as Legacy awkwardly makes her way up the beach. This is probably the first time she’s touched the ground in a while. Felt the slightest bit of safety doing so. Legacy shuffles her long body forward, leading Hywl to a bluff. Of course. She would never leave herself so exposed, even for just a few minutes. She settles into the shade, a relief for Hywl’s burning paws.

“My father is not a good dragon,” she begins hoarsely. “He comes from a proud bloodline of Coatl. His parents, my grandparents, wanted him to continue the noble lineage. But he fell in love with a Spiral.

“She was beautiful, with the most striking golden eyes. Her underbelly was white, contrasting her deep purple scales. Trumalen was warned against mating with her. Shadow and Light could never survive together, never mind the low chances that she would bear a Coatl to be the heir to that awful bloodline. But he spat in my grandparents’ faces and nested four eggs with her. I was the last. All four were Spirals.

“I don’t know what he expected, or why he reacted the way he did. Hatching a Coatl from a Spiral’s nest is like convincing a wartoad to join your clan. He was angry, I remember. Maybe he told himself lies, tried to convince himself that love could help him have it both ways. He’d have his love and a heir to appease his parents.” She snorts humourlessly. “Who knows? Maybe I’ve gotten it all wrong and my grandparents are the ones who killed her. I doubt it though. If they take the thing he loves most away, he’ll never carry on the legacy, and there are no other heirs to do it for him. It’s too much of a risk.”

“So... do you really think he killed your mom?” Hywl asks timidly.

“Of course I do.” Legacy glares at him. “She’s been missing for months. I’m sure she’s gone.” Her voice hitches on the last line. “And he must have done it, and known that I knew, or why else would he chase me?”

“Maybe he wants to explain.”

She snorts. “He can explain when my heir faces him.”

Hwyl stalls mid-air. “Your... your heir?” he shrieks.

Legacy rolls her eyes. “Yes, my heir. A dragon that is worthy in his eyes, one who can match his purity. Except it was from my bloodline, one he sought to wipe from memory. Oh, and you’re going to sire the first generation.”

“I’m going to what now?”

“You raise your voice like that a lot,” she noted dully. “No, we’re not going to mate now, in the air. That would be silly, and where would the eggs go? As soon as we land in the Ashfall Waste and find shelter, that’s where we’ll mate.”

Hywl thought he was going to die from anxiety over another flight’s border. “I’m too young to raise a family!”

“I’ll be doing most of the raising,” she reassured him. Well, it was supposed to be reassuring, but it made Hywl feel a lot worse about the fates of his unborn hatchlings. “You can hunt and forage for them so they grow to be big and strong. And when they’re old enough, they’ll battle to see who is the strongest of them all.”

Her tone scared him too much to admit. He desperately wanted to turn back, but they were too far away from his own clan for him to remember how to get back. Her scent was the only thing he could remember now, and for better or for worse, this was how it would be. He could not fight her, or he would risk losing everything. His memories, his sense of belongings, maybe even his life if he got too irritating. She had fixated herself onto one sole purpose, and it would take a deity to stop her now. Until this magical heir was born, their lineage would be soaked in blood and fury.

Hywl resigned himself with a sigh.
