Dorian always had an interest in learning, knowledge, and science. In the hyper-logical environment of an ice clan, these interests are understood and even nurtured, but among his family, guardians all, it was a source of concern. Children have their own interests, of course, but as Dorian approached adulthood, he could never bring himself to put those interests aside. According to his family, his only purpose in life was to fight and protect his charge, when he found it. But instead of studying with the trainer, he read books on tactics and military history. Useful knowledge, certainly, but without physical training behind it, he would never be able to put it into practice. Compared to other guardians his age, he had better instincts and a deeper understanding of the workings of combat, but he was weak, and his reflexes were poor.

Then Dorian came of age.

He set out on his Search, with the worried, reluctant blessings of his family. His charge was to the northeast, in the Shifting Expanse or the Sunbeam Ruins—or so he hoped. If there was anyone who would appreciate his thirst for knowledge and his desire to fight intelligently, it was there, among the scientists or the scholars. But to get there, he had to pass through the Ashfall Waste, and this worried him.

It wasn't that the fire dragons were unfriendly towards him. All of Sornieth knows of the Search, of course, and, like all the rest of the continent, fire dragons know to treat guardians on their Search with respect and offer them hospitality, lest future guardians avoid them and they lose any chance of gaining such a powerful ally themselves. No, it was the creatures of the Waste, beastclans and animals who wielded fire. It was here, in the Ashfall Waste, that Dorian learned to fight the hard way. There were times when he barely survived, and times when he knew he had no choice but to flee. But he grew stronger.

The Shifting Expanse was a disappointment. Lighting Dragons were interested in learning only inasmuch as it furthered their ambitions. There was a beauty in the way they harnessed their intellect and their power to shape the desert to their needs, but it wasn't a beauty that Dorian sought. He passed through the Expanse and came to the Sunbeam Ruins.

It was here, beside the sundial, that he found what would become the New Moon Enclave. It was still tiny and unnamed, consisting only of Kira, Misa, and Matt, who had joined for reasons that are still opaque to everyone. But when Dorian saw them, talking quietly together outside what was, at the time, a tiny lair, he knew he had found his charge. This clan, as a whole, was what he had been born to protect.

The others were startled, to say the least, when he arrived and announced out of nowhere that they were his charge. But Kira accepted him; they needed more members, and besides that, who would refuse the protection of a guardian? From then on, Dorian has been one of Kira's most trusted lieutenants, even after they acquired enough fighters that the two of them seldom fought alongside each other.

Matt, the third member of their former combat group, has been put in charge of training younger warriors. But when groups of fully trained warriors venture forth on excursions into significant danger, it's Dorian who leads them. The rest of the time, he keeps the clan safe by overseeing the guards and doing regular flights over the lair and the surrounding area. There's seldom anything to see; the clan has few enemies. Still, that's no reason to get lax. He also participates in meetings of the clan's council, representing the warrior branch of the diplomatic arm.

On a personal level, Dorian is stern, without much time or appreciation for humor. The clan understands and values his intellectual leanings, and he spends much of his downtime playing games of strategy or studying the ancient scrolls of military history to which he now has access as a resident of the Sunbeam Ruins. For all that, he's kind, in his way, and somewhat to his bemusement, the quieter hatchlings tend to gravitate to him.
