”Who can you trust? (Who can you trust?)
When everything, everything, everything
You touch turns to gold, gold, gold…

Everyone knows the curse of greed and what it does to dragons, the calling of gold, silver, trinkets and other various items that they have plundered throughout the centuries of their very long lifespans. And everyone should know the tale of King Midas and how whatever he touched turned to gold, that being food, common items he used everyday, and eventually one day even he ended up turning his daughter Marigold to gold as well. The reason why I tell you this? It’s because a dragon knows as Tariq suffers from the same fate as King Midas.

This story starts as normal as it could possibly could. Tariq’s hatching was a grand celebration! For he was born in a time where kings and queens lived, and he was an heir to the throne. Though overtime, the call of the throne was not something Tariq wanted. He’d rather be a peasants son, living off the land and living a vagabond life, not living off of others profits and exploiting the lower class. Obviously, the Wildclaw couldn’t discuss this with his parents, for he was a royal. And royals didn’t think for the common folk. Though, one day, he snuck out of the castle and went into the nearby woods. He wanted to be away from all the hustle and bustle of the castle, he didn’t like living the royal life…

In the middle of the woods, he stumbled across of a lake that was in a perfect circle, with the moon reflecting off of its surface. He smiled to himself, for he found a quiet place that only he knew and no one could take that away from him. He decided to spend the night away from his family, if only he knew what would happened when he’d wake. Once he woke up, due to the sun streaming through the tree line, he made his way back towards the castle he called home. He ended up getting a earful from his mother.

“Mother! I was fine! I just went into the forest to get away from the castle for a night! I came right back didn’t I?” Tariq exclaimed to his mother. His mother huffed, not happy at her son, but knew he was right. “Yes, you did in fact come back, this time. You are a Prince! You need to act like it Tariq!” She said, claws waving in the air as she talked. “For all we know, you could have gotten kidnapped by bandits!” She said, hitting Tariq slightly with her claws. The Prince protected himself from the onslaught, and by accident, his own claws had touched his mother’s hand. He watched with horror as his mother turned completely to a gold statue.

“M-mom…?” He asked. No response.

He looked left and right before fleeing to his room, took some of his possessions and fled to the next town over.

No one would know him there.

A couple years later…

Living undercover as a prince of a kingdom was hard, for everyone knew your name, and what you looked like. Especially when you are a prince, and suffered from being gold touched. Though Tariq fled his home town a few years back, he eventually made his way back to that lake. And lived out in a small cabin away from everyone. Though he did end up going into town every once in awhile, he didn’t overstay his welcome.

Though today would mark a change in his life, for the better since he turned his mother into a gold statue. It started out as a normal day with Tariq going out into town for a supply run, he had run into the love of his life.

As he went by the stalls collecting his daily rations for the month, he had overheard the sounds of guards yelling the words “Stop! Stop that Thief!” Though, Tariq didn’t know this dragon, he knew that he had to help them. Which is why he threw himself between the guards and the dragon, which he now noticed was a skydancer.

“Citizen, you are interfering with Royal business, please move out of the way.” The lead guard said, drawing the sword out of his sheath, with intend to harm. Tariq smirked, before he bend down low to the ground to pick up some dirt.

“Hmm…how about…no?” He spoke as he threw the dirt at the guards it becoming dust in the air as they struggled to see. Tariq grabbed the skydancer’s hand, completely forgetting he can turn things to gold, as he rushes to his house outside the town. It was only then did he realize that he was still holding their hand.

But to his and her surprise, they where both shocked to see that they hadn’t turned each other to gold.

“You’re just like me?”
“You’re just like me!”

They had both said at the same time.

“What’s your name?”
“What’s your name?”

They asked in sync once again.

“You first,” Tariq asked the female skydancer before him.

“I am Kintsugi, a skydancer cursed of having the gold touch. I see you suffer the same fate…?” She asked, leading on for his name. “I am Tariq, first born of the King Geinor and Queen Inari.” He whispered.

Kintsugi’s eyes widened in surprise, and went to bow, but Tariq stopped her before she could.

“Please don’t bow, I’m a disgraced prince. I turned my mother to a gold statue and ran away.” He said to the only other person he knew that also was cursed like him.

Kintsugi took Tariq’s claws into her own before she began to speak. “Tariq, you may have been cursed and turned your mother into a gold statue. But you need to reclaim your birthright of becoming a king. When you disappeared that night, your father turned into a cruel and unforgiving king, and he married the most evil queen we have seen.” She spoke.

“You must confront him.”

Tariq knew he had to confront his father, but he didn’t want to go alone. “If I confront him, will you join me?” He asked her.

“Of course! You saved my life from rotting away in the dungeons, the least that I could do is help you face your father.” Kintsugi said with a smile.

The coming day, Tariq and Kintsugi went up to the gates of the castle. Even though he knew the steps of the castle by hand, he was nervous about facing his father. Though this time, he was with Kintsugi. Two guards sat by the entrance to the castle, with weapons drawn, blocking the entrance.

“Stop! Citizens aren’t allowed to approach the castle without written permission from the King or Queen.” One guard said. “I’m no citizen, I am Tariq, first born of the King Geinor and Queen Inari.” He said, eyes narrowed. The guards, understanding the importance of his title, and the importance of his return, let them through. The two dragons made their way to the throne room, where King Gemior sat, the Queen nowhere to be seen.

“What is the meaning of this?! Guards! Take them away!” The king exclaimed.

“Guards, stand down, for he does not know who he is talking to.” Tariq said, removing his cloak. “For I am Tariq, first born of the King Geinor and Queen Inari.” He said, with his father not believing his eyes. “Father, I’ve been in hiding for too long, I ran away from the castle. I was the one that turned my mother, the Queen into a gold statue. Father, I am Gold Cursed. You can’t expect me to rule a kingdom with this curse.” Tariq said to his father.

“No, you can’t. And I can’t expect you to lead a kingdom Tariq,” His father started. “But I am glad that you did come back home, I searched for you ever since you disappeared that one night. But I couldn’t keep up the search forever, so I just eventually gave up in the end.” He spoke, giving his son a hug, Tariq fearing the worse. “I know it’s been difficult when you lost your mother. But your home now, stay here.”

“Father, I can’t, the curse-“ Tariq started.

His father put a hand up. “I know, and I’m come up with a solution. You can still be the prince, put you have to live in exile. You will have your name, put your title will only be useful to use in this province.”

Tariq looked at Kintsugi and smiled. “That can work, Father.”

And within the following years, the King placed Tariq in exile. But that didn’t matter to Tariq, for he had Kintsugi at his side.

“Hey Kintsugi?”
“Yes?”
“How would you like to be my Queen?”

Even though King Midas’ story ended up with him loosing his daughter and everything else, at least this story ended up with Tariq having a happy ending with his forever mate Kintsugi.
