lore ❧

Calm and gentle. Thoughtful. Caring. Not the words that any dragon who had heard the story of Ruri would use to describe her. Not the words of the dragons now, but those are the words that the dragons of Ruri's past would have used to describe their clanmate and friend. A pleasing dragoness, they would have said. Strong and proud, good with words. A fighter, but loyal to her clan.

It was never a surprise when a dragon new to the clan found out that Ruri was the heir to a magnificent clan, merely waiting in the clan until it was time for her to return to her true home and inherit the golden throne passed down by her family for generations.

What was a surprise, however, was the discovery of an infection, a leakage in her bloodline.

Her mother had come to the clan, ready to take her back to where she belonged. Invited into the lair for dinner before she left along with Ruri, she acted perfectly normal until somewhere in the conversation, a dragon spoke the fateful word; roses. She let out a howl, and with Ruri watching in horror, bared her teeth and transformed into some kind of beast, a terrifying monster that ravaged the lair before finally racing out into the wild, never to be seen again. Heart beating rapidly and mind whirring, Ruri turned to the clan leader, who was staring at her in terror as though she were a bomb about to explode. She was sent without pause to her kingdom, leaving her old clan behind to piece together the broken pieces of their lives and home.

But it seemed news had reached her father of her mother's descent into madness, and she was locked in a cell, thirsty and hungry, for days on end. When at last the king came to see his daughter, the once glorious princess, Ruri was in ruins. He told her that after investigation by his dragons, they had discovered her mother was from a tainted bloodline, in which every dragon had gone completely and utterly berserk. It seemed that Ruri's grandmother had had a fondness for roses, and had been driven into her madness by the stab of a rose's thorn. The mention of a rose had brought on her mother's madness because of that, and Ruri was told that one day, she too would be corrupted by the mention of her mother, or a reminder of her mother's madness.

After that, no one spoke to her for days on end. She was brought food and water, but nevertheless entered a seemingly endless circle of basic, routine actions, as though in an ever repeating nightmare.

But then, a guard took pity and spoke. They conversed, and both dragons were lulled into a false security... Until, alas, the guard mentioned the word that had always been destined to bring Ruri's fate upon her.

Home.

Memories flooded her, of her last dinner, the dragons, her mother, the ruins of her beloved home.

And all chaos broke loose.

She ripped the bars apart, making it past guard after guard until she reached the palace, where she was captured and taken far away. The last thing she knew before she was released into the wild, where she would become a beast, an animal, was her father. Telling her that she would never speak to a dragon again. Telling her she could never see a dragon again. Telling her she could never go home.
