Briar

When Briar came of age, he left his clan to find his charge. While searching, he discovered Clan Frosthill, a place he knew would be his home.

Shortly after arriving in the kingdom, Briar met a young widow, an obelisk named Shadow. Shadow was caring for her hatchling daughter Iolite, but struggling without the help of Iolite's other mother Persephone, who was exalted to the Earthshaker.

When Briar met Shadow, it was when the young dragon accidentally marched her shopping cart into a display of berries at the Claw-mart. Briar helped Shadow pick up the berries and cooed over Iolite.

After purchasing their groceries (and paying some damage for the berries), Briar and Shadow decided to go out for coffee at Taste of Nature. They hit it off immediately and agreed to meet again later that week.

Shortly after their initial meeting, Briar and Shadow started to date each other exclusively. They each communicated and set their own boundaries, which they both promised to stay within.

A year down the line and Briar was very happy with his new mate Shadow and their daughter Iolite. However, Briar couldn't feel completely content because he was still missing something - his charge.

Briar and Shadow hammered out a solution which worked for many years. Briar would search for his charge for half of the year and spend the other half at home with Shadow and Iolite. When Iolite came of age, Shadow began traveling with Briar, both returning to visit Iolite for only a quarter of the year.

On one such visit, Iolite was expecting her third nest, but she and her mate mysteriously disappeared before her eggs could hatch. As a result, only one of the hatchlings survived, leaving Briar and Shadow grief-stricken and alone to raise their grandson.

They decided to name him Peter and, because the two mates refused to separate after the disappearance of their daughter, took him with them on their search for Briar's charge.

Shortly after Peter joined them on their travels, ancient dragons began to reappear, many guardians finding them while searching for their charges. Briar felt like he was finally getting closer to finding his charge.

Shadow and Briar began visiting the Clan Frosthill more and more as more ancients were found and needed a home.

One day, Briar's search brought the three dragons to a giant chunk of ice. The faint outline of a large dragon could be seen inside of the ice.

Briar began to break the ice while Shadow stayed back and shielded Peter from any ice shards. Eventually, the dragon, now revealed to be a gaoler, was free, but still very cold.

The small family set up camp around the gaoler. The built a fire next to him and covered him with warm blankets.

Days later, after Shadow and Briar nursed him back to health, the gaoler awoke to a tiny coatl climbing on his chest and small talons poking his eyes. The dragon yelped, alerting Shadow and Briar to his awakened state. The two dragons rushed to the gaoler's side.

When Shadow and Briar arrived, they saw the giant dragon gently playing with their grandson and tickling his toes. Both older dragons found this adorable.

Upon noticing Shadow and Briar watching him, the gaoler blushed and set Peter down, who toddled over to his grandparents.

After thanking them for saving his life, the gaoler introduced himself as Ryan of the order of Seekers. His job is to capture shade-touched individuals and bring them into custody. While Ryan was seeking his latest enemy, a heavy snowstorm hit, trapping him in ice for thousands of years.

Briar explained the search and charges to Ryan, asking him if he would like to station himself in the kingdom where they lived as his original home would be very run down at this point. Shadow also explained that they were used to traveling and wouldn't mind seeking for the shade-touched with him.

Ryan accepted their offer and the newly grown family traveled together back to Clan Frosthill.

Shadow, Briar, and Peter quickly adapted to living with Ryan. He became like a son to Shadow and Briar and a father to Peter. He fit into their family perfectly, filling a void they didn't know they had.
