It was dark, but I couldn’t sleep. Rolling away from my sister, I got up. I didn’t get far however when our caretaker caught me. “Ripple? What is it?”

Mercy padded up to me, yawning, clearly tired. Even in the dark it was clear how pretty the white dragon was. “I can’t sleep.” I admitted sheepishly. I heard Mercy give a small giggle as as she swept a tail around my smaller frame. “You know,” She said, tilting my head up to a small opening in the cavern the nursery was in.

“I was just like that when I was younger, could never sleep! It drived the others crazy.”

I looked up at her in surprise. “Really?” I whisper yelled, afraid to wake my sister. “Of course, I had a lot of energy as a dragonet.” She said, smiling. “Hey Ripple, do you know why your father named you that?”

I stared at her dumbfounded, realizing I never knew. “No..” I trailed off. She reached into her small bag and pulled out a small container before pouring water out of it, creating a small puddle in front of me. Without saying a word, she touched the surface, and instantly small little lines were created around them... like the pattern on my wings.

“They’re called ripples.” She said, looking back at me. I hadn’t entirely heard her, as I was intranced with how the water moved.

I was snapped out however when she got up. “You need to sleep, do you want to be all sleepy when your sister wants to play?” She asked me. “No! If I’m sleepy, she’ll win!” I realized, getting up. “Goodnight Mercy!” I quietly called out as I went back to my sister. As I left, I heard a quiet “goodbye” from her.

...

I woke up slowly, being met with my sister poking me with her tail.

“Wake up sleepyhead!” She chirped as I opened my eyes. I smiled and stood up. Life really was great.

...

I looked down at the hog thing that was standing before me, confused. “Isn’t she beautiful?” Mercy asked, nudging me forwards. The hog snuggled its snout into my arm, tilting its head in a way so its tucks wouldn’t touch me. It seemed friendly.

“Her name is Honey, she’s my old familiar!” Mercy said from behind me. “They’re like companions, that you care for. Honey is very lovely.” Mercy said, nudging me forwards once again. Obliging, I leaned down to look closer to what Mercy called a ‘Undergrowth Shovelsnout’. It looked back at me curious but seemingly happy. It was kind of cute.

“You would really let me have her?” I asked Mercy. “Of course!” She said, seeming confident in that statement. “Every dragon seems a companion! And I think Honey would be good for you.” I stood up again, but laid my still small wings over Honey. “Thank you Mercy.” I said. “Oh it’s no problem!”

...

My sister shook me awake, being in a rush. “Wh-” she covered my mouth, shushing me. She didn’t even give me a moment to think before I was being shoved though a small hole and being pulled through on the other side by two other dragonets. Once on the other side, I whisper yelled at my sister, confused and frustrated on what was happening. She was about to explain when we heard someone in a threatening tone demand for us. I, with the other two I didn’t even know, thought it better not to listen. My sister didn’t listen. She was back in a minute with a face that even made me filled with dread.

“We need to run.”

...

I demanded where, having no idea where we could possibly go. The other two suddenly seemed a lot more concerned one we realized we were serious about what my sister hear. The other two said that they had an idea, but even they seemed uncertain. They asked if we knew how to hunt, and after we admitted we didn’t. With more hesitation then ever, they led us somewhere, and even though my sister seemed okay I felt suspicious.

They led us to a small opening, and gasped as they pushed away from rocks to reveal... the sky. It was like the thing I had seen in the skylights, but so big! I looked up, and so did my sister. The two dragons let us to a small outcrop, saying they didn’t have any other ideas on where to hide. But upon closer inspection, there was a dragon there! At first we were scared, and the dragon was surely confused. But after a lengthy explaining, the dragon agreed to let us hide with them.
