"The morning was hot and humid, promising a truly scorching midday. As they trekked through the thick jungle, the vines and leaves blocking their path seemed to grow thicker by the minute. Comet looked to Heracles, who was very much not suited for this environment, his large fins kept getting tangled in the low hanging foliage. She was about to suggest they turn back, when she saw it; There was a faint glow coming from a hollow log, the gently pulsing blue light drew her eye, her breath caught in her throat. She tapped her claw twice against the edge of Heracles’s shell to get his attention, and pointed out the fallen tree. He sat back on his haunches as she made her way towards the glowing hollow. She reached into the mossy log and felt a slight electrical charge from something smooth and hard, now sure that it was an egg, she removed it as fast as she could without damaging it. Comet made her way back to Heracles cradling the egg close to her chest, he tilted his head this way and that to get a better look at what she was carrying, after he realised what it was he stood quickly beak snapping in excitement, Comet smiled at this, and nodded her agreement.

They made their way through the thick wood even slower than before, planning to stop as soon as they found an open clearing, and soon enough they saw a gap in the trees and headed for it. As they traveled the egg had been pulsing more and more frequently, and as she placed it down on the makeshift bed of leaves she saw the firsts cracks begin to form, suddenly an anxiety swept through her, how could she possibly raise this child, she hadn’t been around hatchlings in so long, but it was far too late to worry about that now as the eggs shell had fully split.

They were so small, a tiny mess of wet fur and leathery wings, their color matching that of the moss growing on the soft ground of the clearing. All her doubts were swept away by the gentle squeaks of the little dragon squirming about before her. Comet reached out to them attempting to organise their limbs and get a better look at what they might be, not enough feathers for a coatl, and nowhere near big enough for an imperial, disregarding the rareness of a lost egg from those folk. A bright blue eye came into view, staring up from a round and gentle face, a tundra then, what business a tundra egg had doing in the depths of the sweltering rain forest, Comet didn’t know nor care. Heracles approached slowly, taking great care to maneuver his large form gently as to not scare the little one, gazing over her shoulder he said something in his soft swooping language that escaped her grasp, the little tundra let out a peep in response which brought a huge smile to the old turtles face as he clicked his beak in happiness once again.

As night fell and the clearing was gently illuminated by the flicker of flames, she watched the tiny green ball of fur sleep gently against her side, letting out a rumbling purr as they did so. Heracles shifted behind her, encircling the both of them with his broad fin before settling down, and as she drifted to sleep she realised that she finally had what she’d always wanted, a family."

Putting down the battered journal, Argo stretches his neck. Watching it in the glass, long and smooth. If he's honest he barely even remembers the time before he was as he is now, but reading his mother's old logs makes him strangely nostalgic. It's been years since he's even seen her, his mother's face once so clear in his mind has become little more that shapes and colors, purple feathers and orange flowers.

Looking around the empty clearing for one last time, he shifts the pack against his flank and sets off
in what he hopes is the direction of home.
