Biography

There exists a lake, at the epicenter of a long ago burned woodland, where the surface of the water stands so still it is said to be like the clearest of mirrors when looked into. Around that lake stands blackened pillars of once evergreen trees, caught in some great calamity though no one can remember it occurring. “It’s always been that way,” is the usual answer, the same response given about the standing snow that covered thick along the ground, and of the deafening silence that laid over the area. No birds flew above, no wind rattled the charred branches. Some chalked it up to a curse placed along the land, and generally accepted it best to just avoid the area given its lack of use and the shoddy mountain trail it took to even reach it.

Undisturbed, empty, alone.

Alone to most, at least. Those who remembered old tales and those who remembered great loss would sometimes suffer the climb and hike, searching out the being who lived at the center of the wood. Some tales told he had laid waste to the trees in order to make the perfect domain, others that the lake at the center was formed of tears shed by a god lacking a heart. But those who made the effort knew better, and at the edge of the lake they would find a being staring lost over the water. No greeting was offered as none would ever be given, but instead a tale. The purchase of a new home, the meeting of new friends, marriages between those in love. Love, kindness, a simple giving of gifts, the helping of a neighbor. Those were the offerings brought before a god of isolation and longing. And in return a smile, blessings of future prosperity and the hope to bring fortune to others, joy the god could no longer partake in.

Conversation finished and the god would turn his gaze back to the water, still as glass, praying to a power even higher still.

For maybe one day, he would be a god no longer.
