There is a bog not far from Clan Ulalume, and it is a lovely bog. In fact, it is even a lovely bog for frogs and their kin, and among the muddy banks, they hold their muddy court. They sing to the moon and sometimes to the stars, and if you catch them in their song, they may even sing to you. Only privileged guests receive this treatment though, as the rest only receive the muck and splash of the bog.
JumJum is the Prince of the Bog, a child too old to be a child, a prince too young to be a king. In the murk below the moon, he roves his parents' court and sings his people's songs with a rumble that comes deep in his throat. All the frogs must sing after all, and should not the prince be the finest voice among them? Every tenor note must glide through the bog clear and true, and only then will the frog’s answer in their chorus.

All the frogs must sing after all, and should not the prince be the finest voice among them? Every tenor note must glide through the bog clear and true, and only then will the frog’s answer in their chorus.
The King of the Bog still sings deepest, though. JumJum must master his voice if he wishes to one day wear his father's crown, but who can compete with the King's beautiful baritone? He and the Queen sing in unmatched harmony, and though JumJum complements their song, he is not yet close to offering it anything it might lack.
And so when the sun is high and the frogs are low, he emerges from the water and sings to the dim, dim Tangled Wood day. He sings to the breeze and the trees and the creatures that watch with their eyes like lanterns far beyond. He sings whether his people hear him, whether his parents scold him or simply beg him to rest just this once. JumJum sings until his heart feels wrung out and his lungs shiver with every breath, aching to produce that last elusive note that will make him a proper Prince, and Prince of the Bog true. |
He will succeed one day. Of that, he feels no doubt. He is the son of the King of the Bog, and his blood will be the bog's until his dying day. When the time is right, his song will come, and his people will listen and answer in murky, burbling chorus. One day, one day, one day.
And until then, every night, he will sing with the bog and the frogs and the moon until the time is finally right. He will tell his people how hard he works, how grand he dreams, and they will carry his faith as their own. This is the way of the bog, after all; they will sing together, sleep together, grow together. In the bog, all is one.
There is a bog not far from Clan Ulalume, and it is a lovely bog.
