"You're here to sabotage me," Dinah says when he enters her chambers, a smuggler's den of ropes and barrels and crates. "Again."

"I am," he confirms. "They would stop sending me if you stopped being such a thorn in our side."

She turns toward him, her Lightweaver-blessed eyes illuminating the velvet drapes hanging above her bed. He can't tell if she's looking directly at him, he's never been able to tell. Her eyes are too regal for this place, she's too regal for this place, too regal to wallow in the mud and filth like the rest of them. Her spines bristle, but no words leave her lips.

"It doesn't have to be like this," he says, averting his eyes, his common eyes. Lesser eyes. "We can start over."

Her eyes narrow, the light dims. "Can we, Isaac?"

He sighs, shakes his head. "The crew's not the same without you or Jairus. Remember--"

"There's nothing to remember," she says, a snarl on her lips. "You made your choice, knowing the cost."

A thousand defenses cloud his mind, but they all die in his throat, scorched to cinders by her virulent gaze.

"Do what you came here to do," she says, exhaustion in her voice. "But leave the past where it belongs."

He turns around, but hesitates by the entrance, glances back at her. "If it had been you back then, what would you have done?"

"What does it matter?" she says, but it's clear she wants no answer. "Sometimes broken things cannot be put back together, no matter the skill of the craftsman."

He's silent for a long time.

"Give Jairus my regards," he says, and takes his leave. He doesn't look back, but he can feel her gaze burning into him until he's well out of sight.
