T R A I T S

Finchberry is a large (even for a guardian!), Seafoam guardian with Speckle patterning across their body broken up by a patchwork of countless scars ranging from small bite- and scratch-marks to deep, wicked-looking keloids. She is rather large for her size, though her wings are much smaller than they ought to be (her wing-growth was stunted due to her upbringing in a too-small holding cell), so with the help of Onyx, Flowerfall, and Mercury, she had wing enhancements put in so she could keep up with her Wind clan. She is a healthy weight, though a bit skinny for her size (she has never been able to keep weight on, as if her body is averse to it), her ribs always showing just a bit through her scaly hide. They have sharp eyes that always seem as though they're searching for either a weakness in an opponent or a hidden danger in their surroundings, which can put many on edge if they aren't used to her mannerisms. Speaking of, Finchberry has a bit of an intimidating presence, as she has a bit of a menacing appearance and doesn't really talk unless necessary...plus, she has a habit of just...looming, wandering around on silent clawsteps and scaring the living daylights out of many dragons caught unawares by seeming to just appear places. Despite her odd, unnerving presence, Finchberry's clanmates know that she cares for Chusquea likely more than any dragon alive, and are quick to defend them to newcomers who call them creepy or unnerving—they have put their life on the line countless times to protect those in the clan, and are always the one to push the clan to accept outsiders, refusing to ever allow a dragon to wander alone and potentially fall into harm's way. Finchberry always seems to have an intuition for that sort of thing—she can tell if a dragon means her clan harm or not with a simple look, and has almost never been wrong.

B A C K S T O R Y

Finch hatched from a lone egg that had been taken from an Arcane nest by a Serthis tribe that lived on the cusp of the Starfall Isles and Scarred Wasteland. The tribe hadn't realized Finch's egg was an egg at all, thinking it was some kind of valuable Arcane stone, and was incredibly surprised to find a baby guardian in their stores. Elated, they raised Finch as a beast of burden and warmount, training her with prodding sticks, whips, and periods of starvation and dehydration until she acted as the perfect, fearsome mount for the tribe's then-leader, a Contaminated Assassin whose name Finch did not know, as she didn't know the Serthis' language, but she called Throat due to the large scar on his throat. Throat was a terrible master, but Finch knew no better; from a young age, Throat would use a catch pole to force her head where he wanted it, and later on, as she grew at an incredible rate, would coil around her neck instead to direct her. She was incredibly young, even as she grew large, yet her intense training and pain-driven desperation made her a powerful and formidable opponent. Finch's onslaughts of attacks coupled with accompanying Serthis' viciousness made quick work of any opponent they faced—dozens of dragons, hundreds of Serthis. Entire young clans fell at Throat's direction, woven around Finch's neck spines with a calling horn in one hand and a wicked staff in the other. They called her a word in their language that sounded somewhat similar to "Finch" and, unbeknownst to her, meant "Dragon-Hound."

Finch's life was one of monotonous violence and hatred. She hated all those around her, all the Serthis and all the other dragons. She knew no language, only the misery and resentment she felt yet had no word for.

It was only when Finch was nearing full adulthood that she lost a battle. Throat had denied her food and water for a week following a bad training session in which she had fallen and injured a valued Flamescale. Typically, even when she was punished, Throat still made sure Finch was fed and watered before taken to battle, but time did not allow for that this time. She was quickly armored and readied for battle, as a large pack of mirrors was spotted nearby—odd, as most dragons, at this point, had learned to avoid Throat's tribe lest they face the wrath of a maddened dragon—and Finch was needed to scare them off, whether that be with a deafening roar or biting a few heads off. As Throat flew Finch toward the Wandering Contagion, the true magnitude of the pack became apparent: it was a feeding frenzy of nearly a hundred mirrors spearheaded by a towering, unfamiliar, two-headed dragon (Finch would later learn this was an Aberration) with foam dripping from its dual mouths and a crazed look in its five eyes. The horde took to the sky as it spotted Finch, and in her exhaustion she had no time to react before she was utterly consumed by the thunderous flapping of wings and victorious screeching of dozens of Plague dragons.

Finch cried out as her wings were shredded by countless hungry mouths while Throat pulled hard on the bit in her mouth, trying to steer her out of the cloud of dragons. She threw her head this way and that, trying to get away from all of it, panicking; if she didn't escape, she'd be killed by dragons, but if she did escape, Throat would probably kill her for failing so miserably. She thrashed about in the air for a moment, teeth breaking through her scales all over her body, before she felt her wings fail her and she plummeted to the ground.

Finch awoke in a carvern, exhausted and in pain. It wasn't in the Scarred Wasteland, for sure, judging by the purity of the soil and the lack of rancid smells. Her body ached and was covered in thick scars, but they had...healed. Healing wasn't a thing in the Wasteland.

A large, fresh fish lay at her feet, and she devoured it. It was the first fresh food she had ever eaten. When she had finished eating, she dared to wander through the tunnel branching off from the cavern, which led into an even larger one. A guardian nearly twice her size sat patiently at the far end. He introduced himself to her as Adonis, and asked her what had led her to be accosted by the mirror pack.

Finch spoke back to him with difficulty, having never spoken her native language but intrinsically knowing it. She explained her life in clipped, clumsy words to a stoic Adonis. She had never spoke to another dragon, and expected him to kill her once she finished speaking.

Adonis shook his head and hissed in...pity? He beckoned her closer, and she hesitantly obeyed. He told her that she had been denied the life of a true dragon, that she had been robbed of her birthright as a child of the gods. When Finch asked what the gods were, Adonis decided right then and there to teach her all he could about Sornieth.

Finch stayed with Adonis for months as he taught her about the world and how to live in it; how to read and write, how to honor the gods, how to hunt. He lived in a lonesome den on the edge of the Starwood Strand near the Arcane/Plague border, which gave Finch plenty of room to stretch her wings and explore a world beyond her narrow life of captivity.

Finch flourished in her freedom. She was malnourished and small for her age due to her time in captivity, but her freedom—and proper nutrition—caused a massive growth spurt in which she grew larger than Adonis in a short couple of months. She found reading, writing, and speaking difficult even with Adonis' careful instruction, but hunting and fighting she took to quickly. She learned what a Finch was, and, thinking they were strange-yet-tasty, accepted that as her name over the Serthis' one for her, as they still sounded similar yet carried different connotations.

After almost half a year of living with Adonis and learning all she could from him, Adonis gave her what he called the most important information of all: the guardian's life purpose, a Charge. He told her that she would have to leave soon on her own Search.

Finch took this information with solemn acceptance. She loved Adonis—he was the only dragon she'd ever known, and he had saved her life and went on to treat her like his own daughter—but she knew there was more out there. She felt the pull of her instincts luring her out to explore, to find her Charge. It had been dulled during her life with the Serthis, but now, she was free to Search.

So she did. She spent one last day with Adonis and then left to search the Starfall Isles and beyond for her Charge.

It was there she met Camay, a small, naive fae who was in a similar situation as her; he grew up apart from the rest of dragonkind. Finch was hesitant to travel with someone else, as she was still very socially awkward, and preferred to keep to herself, but Camay proved... somewhat charming in his oddness.

Together, Camay and Finch wandered Sornieth, visiting all Flights' territories as they sought their purposes. While on their journey, Camay and Finch grew closer, becoming almost...friends. While in the Everbloom Gardens of the Viridian Labyrinth, Finch discovered what she believed could be her Charge: a clan. She needed a new clan. Camay, not sharing her desire to find a clan but wanting to support his friend, said he would help her find one. They traveled until they arrived at the Windswept Plateau, the pentultimate stop on their journey (before the Iceswept Plateau). Camay was uneasy; he had often heard whispers of how strange, selfish, lazy, and vain Wind dragons were from his time on the Starfall Isles. Finch, also a Starfall native, felt similarly, wondering if she might find her family there...but she was determined. With Camay perched on her shoulder, they journeyed through the Plateau's lower levels, unable to reach the higher ones due to the tumultuous wind. It was then that Finch decided she would go to the Tangled Wood and live there with a clan. She enjoyed the quiet darkness of it—despite her traumatic upbringing, she still found herself drawn to dark solitude. Camay disagreed; despite his initial concerns, he found that he loved the Windswept Plateau. Finch expected that she and Camay would part ways right then.

Finch, usually so uncaring and aloof, surprised even herself when she asked him to go with her to the Tangled Wood. He declined, asking her instead to stay with him in the Windswept Plateau. Finch asked why he wanted her there. Camay asked why she wanted him in the Tangled Wood. They both realized that they wanted each other wherever they went. They didn't want to live without one another. Finch, unable to understand her own strong emotions, stormed off, saying she was going to the Tangled Wood with or without Camay. She spent that night alone in an old burrow in the Steppes as Camay desperately tried to understand his own emotions. He decided he would rather be miserable in the dark and dreary Tangled Wood than miserable without Finch, so he picked her a bunch of berries she'd enjoyed during their time in the Plateau and went to tell her. However, Finch, at the same time, had been lying awake and discovered that she would rather be with Camay in a land they could both be happy in than without him in a land only she was happy in. They met each other in the middle of the Steppes at night, nearly barreling one another over in their excitement. Both awkwardly stumbled to tell each other how they felt, but eventually, they reached the conclusion that they just might love each other.

They elected to stay in the Windswept Plateau for a while to rest and think before officially deciding where they'd stay. One day, as they took a careful flight through some of the easier parts of the Reedcleft Ascent, Camay and Finch discovered a young mirror hatchling that had been abandoned on the Wind-Plague border. They decided to take care of her, as Camay was unwilling to let a young dragon die. Well, to take care of a hatchling, they'd need a proper den...and proper food...and a good schedule...maybe some warm clothes, too...

After two months of caring for the mirror, who they called Shea (at the suggestion of Camay...Finch was terrible at names), Camay told Finch that maybe they could have their own clan. Finch was hesitant, until a few weeks later, they discovered the lonesome pair of the young Earth imperial Pears and older Fire gaoler Flowerfall, who had come from their respective Flights to seek refuge on the Windswept Plateau. Having established a humble cave for themselves, Camay and Finch allowed them to stay with them for a bit. They were soon joined by the Nature banescale Saph, Arcane nocturne Adaryn, and Plague imperials Crow and Marill.

Finch became oddly silent the more dragons that stayed with them, while Camay, though a bit inexperienced in the social department, thrived. Finch had much to think about...

One day, Camay asked her what was the matter. "I think I have found my Charge," she said quietly. "It's a clan. Our clan." And so, they named their group the Chusquea clan, and Finch, having found her Charge, took on the name "Finchberry." As the clan grew and grew, Finchberry and Camay adopted the Ice pearlcatcher hatchling Akoya before eventually having their own clutch, which included Charcoal.

After a year of leading their young clan through a peaceful time of growth, Camay was caught in a Plague raid on the Wind border while foraging. He would have died for his injuries if not for Finchberry, who had had an unshakeable feeling that something bad was going to happen all day. She went out with Saph to check on Camay and was able to save him from a raid being carried out by a Plague mirror pack. He nearly succumbed to his injuries, but with the help of healers Flowerfall and Pears, he pulled through. This was the most panic Finchberry had ever felt—she had nearly lost her mate, the one who she had been around the world with and found her Charge with. She had felt so terrified—what if he had been killed, just as she was nearly killed by a similar pack long ago?

It was then that Camay, recovering from his injuries, became obsessed with becoming stronger, so that something like that wouldn't happen again. Finchberry knew it was unhealthy, but she didn't know what to do to help. She herself had felt similarly after she was attacked, but she had had the guidance of Adonis to see her through it healthily...she lacked all of Adonis' wisdom, tact, and patience. She did her best to be there for Camay, but she felt utterly powerless as she watched him fall deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole of ancient magics. She trusted Adaryn, the mage, to guide him through it, but she didn't trust magic itself. What if he hurt himself? He was so small, so...not weak, but...of different strengths, less physical strength. He could overexert himself and die, surely. Finchberry and Camay got in many arguments during this time, with Finchberry lacking the words to properly express her fear, and Camay too enamored with the possibility of fixing his own weaknesses that he didn't see the potential danger of it.

And then, Camay went through with a complex, highly arcane ritual to give himself more power. Without telling Finchberry, or even Adaryn. Finchberry awoke to the sound of a sharp explosion in the middle of the night to find Camay missing from his typical spot (curled up on her foreleg). She rushed outside ahead of the rest of the jostled clan to find a pink nocturne at the bottom of a shallow, smouldering crater.

Camay had been transformed into a large nocturne, eyes now swirling with magical energy.

Finchberry forgave Camay in her fear of his death, and their relationship soon healed—she found it was nicer to have a mate of a more comparable size, and Camay genuinely was so much happier, swearing to never do something so foolish ever again. He seemed to flourish in their new body, teeming with new joy and liveliness...and also powerful, sometimes incontrollable magic. The chaos of his magic scared Finchberry—she had always been apprehensive of magic, as the Serthis mages in Throat's tribe would often lob spells at her and make her see terrifying illusions—but she slowly began to get used to it, just as she did Camay's larger size.

From then on, Camay and Finchberry led and continue to lead Chusquea as a powerful unit, stepping up when the other falters and dedicating themselves to the wellbeing of their clan. Finchberry thrives in a clan of her own, surrounded by all that make up her Charge, and serves as the fierce protector of those she holds so closely, refusing to ever allow a dragon to live a life like she did so long ago.

T R I V I A

↠ Finchberry often hisses when she speaks, as she didn't learn to roar, growl, or any other typical noise a dragon makes until she was found by Adonis. She doesn't speak very often, partly due to this and partly due to just not having much to say, preferring to let Camay speak for the both of them.

↠ She prefers to fight with tooth and claw over magic or breath weapons.

↠ Finchberry walks without making any noise, which is a skill she learned from intense Serthis training.
