Biography

Named after Aoraki in New Zealand. Aoraki was named 'Mount Cook' by European explorers in 1851 to honor Captain James Cook, but following a settlement between the Crown and the Ngāi Tahu Māori in 1998, the mountain was officially renamed 'Aoraki/Mount Cook' to honor the traditional Māori name for it. The mountain is sacred to the Ngāi Tahu and very important in their religious traditions.
