"Where did the humans go?"

How did I get here? I don't know. My once beautiful shrine is now run down and all of the offerings that have been given to be are all gone and stolen. I heard once a god is forgotten they disappear forever, so why am I still here?

My earliest memory is of humans crying and begging at my feet, they gave me expensive offerings and asked me to scare away the swamp monsters that so often terrorized their land. And so, I did. They kept giving me offerings and I kept doing my job. Before I knew it I had a shrine, daily offerings and was loved and cherished by all who lived on this land.

Then that horrid human came, they had arrived with supplies that we're able to kill the swamp beings, and they were easy to use. I could see why the humans had switched over to the bloody way. The offerings that I took were expensive, 40% of their crops and animals and with a growing population the resources could be used elsewhere.

Slowly by slowly, the humans stopped visiting and I grew weak. All the swamp monsters are gone, extinct by the humans. Their beautiful swampy lands were destroyed and turned into homes for humans.

Now, why am I still here?

I suppose it could be because am elder could be alive, they should remember my duties, what I had done for them in their youth. I could be a legend passed down from generation to generation? I think I would be much stronger if so. Perhaps the animals remember me, the ones who I had stolen their relatives from, or the forest ones who still come by my shrine for shelter on a rainy night.

I do not know why I still exist but I will wait for a purpose to come while I am still here and if does
arrive I will put my all so that maybe I could be cherished once more.
