Biography
|
When the Divinity reached out to him, it burned. Behind his eyelids shone a blinding, inescapable light. His ears rung with a deafening peal. Only suffocating static remains. Every moment a relentless cacophony battering the thin threads of his cognizance. He writhes and thrashes, clawing at his throat but finding himself unable to bleed. The Divinity would not allow it. - He was once a compassionate young man, burdened with an impossible task: to redeem the Fallen Ones, every last one. The crushing enormity of such a task embittered him. Time and time again, his help would be refused, and he would be bombarded with abuse, day in and day out. This was not a fate he chose - a Brotherhood had sprung up in Lightning in the wake of the Burning Period devoted to the redemption of the Fallen. So many had Fallen after the war, and no matter how many penitentiaries were founded, there always seemed to be more. People were scared, and for good reason: it tended to take them years to recover, and in the meantime they were often violent, feeling as though there were no repercussions for further wrongdoing. They destroyed villages like Fathom's own, but luckily for him, he was found and raised by the Brotherhood who raised him to believe that such a goal could be achieved with enough listening and patience and cajoling and commiserating and pleading and- Enough became enough. Years and years of mistreatment internalized. Why did he suffer so much? All he wanted was to help, but it was impossible. All he gave was kindness and all he received was violence. He hated them. He hated himself. He hated the Divinity for letting this all happen - the war, the Fallen, his plight. In a moment of deep anguish and despair, he tried to release himself from it. That was when he received a Miracle. Fathom once questioned why the Divinity never seemed to intervene, why Its mercy seemed so rarely given. He understands now. Every thought of the Divinity creates ripples, every movement is a landslide, every breath a hurricane. On the rare occasion he can think lucidly, he wonders if this is a cruel joke - that he should now know how to accomplish his great task but be unable to act, either to communicate it to his Brothers or to do it himself. He wonders whether it is out of spite, or is It as overwhelmed by all It thinks and perceives as he is? Is It incapable of knowing how vast the difference between their minds is, and doesn't know what this Miracle did to him? Would he be released from his Miracle or would he spend eternity this way, understanding his creator as surely no one else could? Such thought is fleeting. |
