She knew that the others would not see her depart. Creeping through the shadows, following a mysterious song, Jorilei emerged from the Underdark tunnels to the surface above. It was late at night, which was what led her to abandon her search party to investigate the singing. Perhaps there was a place that they would be able to raid, and this woman would lead her to it. The dark forest and the thought of returning empty-handed made her uneasy, but she pressed on despite it. If this were to yield something magnificent for her party to steal from, then she would have nothing to worry about.

The singing became louder as she moved through the forest, her footsteps as silent as a big cat’s as she ducked in the underbrush to stay out of anything’s view that may be in the area. And from anybody else who may be following the sound of the song. Once it sounded as though the culprit was right in front of her, it faded away. There were no lights, no buildings, no creatures. There was nothing. She stood up straight after listening to the silence for a while, and glanced around, side to side, and scanned the canopy above her.

Nothing.

Then she looked down: and there it was. A rather large piece of silver, engraved with the image of a woman, mid-dance. She was dressed up as if she were performing for somebody, and her hair was nicely set in a bun. Jori crouched down and took the coin up in two fingers, examining it. A quiet sigh escaped her lips, and her hand dropped to the ground in defeat, limp at her side. The moon above her had moved significantly. She must have been walking after the sound for hours. She ran her other over her face in distress before letting it fall to her side as well, and stared into the darkness for a while, thinking.

If she returned to the Underdark, and to her family, with only this silver coin on her behalf, then she would be punished for returning empty-handed. Her sister was ruthless when punishing her, as she herself was one of Lolth’s priestesses, so she was not persuaded to return at all. Serious failures such as this, especially from somebody like herself, were not tolerated.

Jori stood back up. She took one more glance around the area, and saw nothing. Who could have dropped this coin here, in a forest such as this? The coin was clean and devoid of any filth, despite having been on the forest floor for an unknown amount of time. It could have been there for years, or it could have been there for minutes. And why had she heard singing that led her here? So many questions filled her mind, but she didn’t know the answers to any of them, and didn’t know if she wanted to.

There was one thing she knew for sure, though: she was not going to return home.
