Grid is perpetually unlucky. At least that's what one might assume, on first impression, as things Grid get involved in tend to go exactly opposite of how they were intended to go. She's thankfully excellent at improvisation, for otherwise she would surely have gone mad long before reaching adulthood, and her fickle attention span helps her more than it ails her. With the addition of some clever spellwork from Valhall's mages, she's more or less a functional dragon making her way through life with a sunny disposition and a knack for telling outrageous tales nobody believes. With good reason, too- it's been proven more than once that she embellishes her stories as much as possible. Best take whatever she says with a grain of salt.
It was a dark and stormy night, deep within the coldest of lairs in the coldest of lands, when a wee egg hatched under the full moon.
That dragon was not actually Grid, no matter that she will vehemently insist so to anyone willing to listen, but she was there to witness it! Barely a few weeks old at the time, she'd been awed as the pitch black, white-eyed dragon emerged from the egg she'd been watching over. And a dozen more eyes had opened along the other Spiral's body, unseeing and blind, and Grid was absolutely convinced she'd watched a true legend be born.
Unfortunately, that very same dragon was subject to a quick end as a slightly inebriated Imperial sat on him. Not quite the stuff of legends, but most definitively the start of a trend concerning just about anything Grid found interesting in life.
When she decided to leave her birthclan to explore the world, she was barely entering adulthood. Experience was in short supply, dreams were endlessly large, and her supplies were nothing to brag about. And her attention span, bless her heart, was non-existent. It didn't take more than a dozen hours before she'd veered off the path she intended to take, following a train of thought that would make little sense in hindsight, but it set her off on a brilliant adventure of a lifetime- the adventure of that time Grid almost drowned after she tried to reach a deceptively close looking gemstone at the bottom of a river. Good times, good times.
It was this adventure, however, that started a chain of events hurling her towards what would, one day, become her permanent home; Valhall. The short story was simple, almost, though nobody quite trusts Grid's retelling of it. Or of anything. After she almost drowned, a pack of traveling dragons swept in to save the day, pulling her soaked and shivering form from the river at the efforts of their mage.
Unsure as to how to proceed in her life as she'd already blown any previous plans apart, she settled for tagging along with the little band of travelers. They called themselves the Anemoi, and she gathered it was supposed to be some sort of tribute to olden gods Grid had never heard of, and their purpose was, simply put, to travel and see the world. Not quite a clan, but moreso an organic, shifting pack sweeping over the lands purely for the joy of it. And that was as good of a purpose as any, she supposed, and Grid joined up with their little band without much more pondering on the matter.
They took her all over Sornieth. Taught her skills she'd surely need- from trade to petty theft to various customs of the different regions. By the time they'd circled back around towards the Icefields, Grid was a properly grown dragon with a fair bit of experience in life under her metaphorical belt.
She had not, however, gotten over her tendency for bad luck.
