Verdigris

Not quite the genius her parents were hoping for, but certainly a mad scientist in her own right, Verdigris spends most of her time in her tower, working on ambitious electrical engineering projects fueled by the power of lightning itself. While she does not often enjoy a disturbance to her work, she welcomes wandering and lost visitors and offers them food and board at the expense of a few experimental shocks.

O, the twice-struck tower,
The lighthouse juxtaposed against the ruins!

Mercy, said the old ones, mercy is
The chance to take a breath, a moment, mercy is
The ability to stop.
To rest. Without stopping, there can be
No mercy; for those stuck in perpetual flight,
Mercy can never be an answer.
Shake, o child;
Your hands a-tremble against the glass,
Clockwork in your breath, you cannot stop;
Stopping would be a kindness, and where the waves crash,
Where the cruel rocks break free of the surf, there can be
No kindness. The tower must stand,
The tower must burn.

As a child, they drew your cards;
Velveteen drawn over silk, fine paper
Too easily torn between your claws, your mother’s metal rings
Cascading down her neck. Ah, said the old one,
Teeth curling over old gums, unfortunate.

Death would be a kindness. Yet
The tower is yours, ever in ruin and ever in might,
Ever proud;

The tower is crumbling;
In the space before you hit the ground,
There’s always yet the chance for flight.
