Biography
Rusalka, (plural rusalki) are Slavic water spirits similar to Western mermaids. They are the souls of women who died violent deaths like murder, or women who died virgins. Some tales include unbaptized children's souls in their ranks and others still include anyone who committed suicide by jumping into a body of water.
Rusalki have finite second lives, corresponding to the time that they lived as a human or until their death is avenged in the case of murder. They live in swamps, rivers and lakes and can be identified by their pale, thin bodies and very long hair that ranges in color from green to blonde.
Depending on the climate they died in, rusalki can be playful and charming, nurturing surrounding plant life where food is plentiful whereas ones from harsher climates are malicious and seek out humans, particularly men, to drown in their home body of water.
Rusalki love dancing and climbing trees. The first week of June is rusalki week where they play among willows and birches and dance by moonlight. Anyone unlucky enough to witness their dance is forced to dance with them until their death. Villages near bodies of water hold ceremonial burials to push the rusalki back into the water.
Rusalki feature prominently in the Metroidvania game, Axiom Verge, as a race of giant mechanical beings on the planet Sudra, heavily armed. They were originally created to protect the Sudrians from the Breach. They appear as both friend and foe. Elsenova is the first seemingly friendly creature met on Sudra and guides Trace through the planet. As he helps repair the Rusalki, they grant him new abilities and access to new areas.
Not all is as it seems. Who are the Rusalki, really, and what are their goals?
