He was always second best.

Never mind that his father came from the same line as that damn Theo. Just because his mother was an outsider... And now this hypocritical clan was accepting outsiders left and right.

Jealousy. Envy. Ilzen knew that was what he felt, and he let himself feel it. As he watched Theo ascend to kinghood, a scheme formed in his mind. He knew there were a few dragons who didn't trust Theo, whether it was because of Theo's parents, or because they disliked Theo's new laws. He would appeal to the sensibilities of those dragons. He'd gain support using his own leadership abilities. And then he'd take power into his own claws. Even if it meant selling his soul.

All of this would take time, and he was willing to wait.

He keeps his hedgehog familiar with reluctance. It was a favorite of his grandfather's, and he wishes the thing would die already so he can stop taking care of it. The hedgehog is gone.
