USIEL

Known by most as “dark-step”, Usiel is an assassin working under the Shadowbinder. It's been a long time since his last mark, and he’s beginning to grow tired of constantly looking over his shoulder.

BIOGRAPHY

Usiel stalked the shadows of the Foxfire Bramble, rife with concern that daybreak would reach his mark long before he did. This area of woods was sparsely populated, and it was all he could do in the murky haze of early-morning to keep himself hidden. Sunrise spelled failure, and it was due any moment now.

Information gathering had identified this spot as a frequent short-cut for Serthis merchants. It connected the land between two nearby tribes in a near-enough straight path, and the mostly open spaces allowed little opportunity for ambush. It was still dangerous to traverse at night, but in an emergency it was still safer than passage through known dragon territory – and he had it on good authority that his mark was set to pass through the bramble tonight.

His body hugged the ground, hunched low amidst what little cover there was. Spines pressed uncomfortably against the soft flesh of his legs, and it was a miracle he hadn’t lost any feathers in the foliage, but morning was fast-approaching, and Usiel refused to leave before he had at least laid eyes on the man he had been paid to kill.

The soft ‘snap’ of a twig underfoot yanked him back from his thoughts. It was nearby, but not quite close enough to see yet. Usiel readied himself, baring his teeth and letting out a long, silent breath of anticipation.

The Serthis potion-master cursed under his breath and picked up his pace, clutching several large scrolls to his chest and moving as fast as his cumbersome luggage allowed. His breathing was shallow and his face slick with sweat. A shaky glance darted around the clearing; hastily scanning his surroundings but too obscured by panic to notice anything that may have looked out of place.

It was perfect.

The Serthis drew closer to his hiding place, and every hair on the back of his neck stood on end. He drew closer still, and Usiel could taste the tension on the tip of his tongue. Seconds drew into hours, until finally the gap between them was closed.

Usiel uncoiled like a snake and pounced. One powerful motion, and the potion-master’s life had ended as swiftly and as peacefully as blowing out a candle. The scrolls fell limp from his grasp, catching the breeze and tumbling further down the path. They left a spotted, bloody trail behind them as Usiel opened his mouth and pulled his teeth from the beast’s neck.

Morning broke on the horizon, and for the briefest of moments, he basked in the warmth of the rising sun and congratulated himself on another job well done.

He’d move the corpse first. It was a good route for assassinations, and he didn’t want the Serthis realising exactly how dangerous it was and forging another path. Then he’d gather up what poisons he could from the discarded bag and leave the opposing clan’s mark somewhere on the scene. It would look like an accident of course: a torn scrap of fabric on a tree and a decapitated body hidden just a touch too sloppily. It was the next in a long line of destabilisation tactics he had been hired to enact, and so far things were progressing exactly as planned.

Usiel smiled and wiped the blood from his mouth. A few more jobs like this and his hoard was going to look very healthy indeed.
