"It wasn’t long ago when Cyphrus and Osuko came to Chipmunk Bluff. Everyone would have sworn they were brothers as inseparable as they are. But, as Cyphrus puts it, they did not, in fact, hatch from the same nest. What was that Mira? Yes, that means they chose each other as family, even if they don’t share blood. I invited them over for tea to hear more of the story. Cyphrus doesn’t speak much, conveniently leaving the talking to Osuko. Though he did explain that they were brothers in arms. They met battling in a war, and never let go of each other. That made me puzzled. No one had heard of any war, but it was obvious that they had come from a place very far away and news may not have traveled to Sornieth or Chipmunk Bluff. Perhaps they’re older than they look? At any rate, he was quiet, practical, knowledgeable, if a little gruff. It was natural that Cyphrus would join the guard patrols shortly after they had made a home for themselves here. Osuko of course joined with him. At that time, though you’re too young to remember, the patrols were a formality set up for as long as anyone can remember. Chipmunk Bluff always had patrols for its borders, but it was so rare that any danger got through that the Guard spent more time policing inner matters than infiltrations. But the university and its research institute were invaluable to the Bluff. It was good foresight to set up those patrols. Around that time is when the attacks started. Rumors of something dark and spectral were spreading, just as the previous commander disappeared. It was so unexpected that the Guard was completely unprepared to deal with a successor – - Oh no no, don’t be afraid little one! Commander Cyphrus and his second-in-command Osuko are out there watching over us. You’re perfectly safe here with Uncle John. Come, sit with me. Where was I? Ah yes. Cyphrus, being a natural leader and strategist to boot, was the obvious choice as the successor. Just as obviously pulling Osuko with him as lieutenant commander. No one questioned that. I don’t think he brought the Great Bird upon us. Don’t listen to anyone else, little Mira. They fear the newcomers each time, particularly Cyphrus and Osuko who you’ve seen speak a language that very few still speak. Cyphrus prays to the Shadowbringer in his mother tongue each night, but he isn’t summoning the dangerous Bird with some ridiculous dark magic, or even for his own protection. He is praying for those he loves and the many that the two of them lost in battle. I would be lying if I said I didn’t empathize with him." |
