Child of Snapdragon Steppe His Charge: The Magic Tradition of the Coatls No one in Clan Hullabaloo expected Ayrdene and Caradoc to return from their visit to their neighbors with a new hatchling. It was understood that most of their own children were sent to the Windsinger, to adopt a new one seemed a strange choice for the couple. But Caradoc crooned and cuddled the young Guardian, answering all questions with "He smells like love and snuggles." Arlen has spent his time in the new clan snuffling through the lair, on a hunt for his Charge. *** Arlen has quickly outsized Ayrdene and Caradoc, though he doesn't seem to take much note of it. He now cuddles the tundra like he used to hold his mammertee plushie. Ayrdene teaches him basic healing techniques, though magic doesn't come easily to him. Lately he's grown restless, frustration at the growing need to complete his Search. Senga and Brighid now take him on their messenger duties, to help him in whatever way they can. *** Magic. It was not unnatural for guardians to practice the art, but it never came as easily to them as it did a fae or tundra. Arlen watched his adoptive parents manipulate their element with seeming ease, and felt a longing as deep as that of his Search. Perhaps the two were connected. He asked the other guardians of the steppe, but none of them proved helpful. Both shrugged their large shoulders and answered, "You'll know it when you see it." So he turned his questions to the most talkative of the clan. Ayrdene listened to Arlen present his case with only a few flicks of her frills, unusual for the "loud" matriarch. "I may know magic but I don't know much else, dear. That Search thing of yours is bafflin'. Well, when I'm baffled, there's only one place I go." Out on the gardens of the steppe, the plucking of a lute carried its music over the soft breeze. Two coatls curled themselves around the warm rocks, Avigail listened as Elwynn hummed his latest piece of coatl poetry. Ayrdene, resting on Arlen's head, clawed at her ears. "Oi, that featherface is gonna burst an ear one day with that squallin'." Arlen felt something stir deep in his chest, "I think it's beautiful." |
