ROLE: Gardener
HOME: The Gloaming Cliffs
LIKES: Sunlight, flowers
FEARS: Weevils

In western lands beneath the Sun,
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.

ABOUT

A quiet breeze rustles the leaves. Sweet birdsong winds its way through the grove, which has sprung up and flourished, prompted by Aster's gentle claws. He is always working, surrounded by sparrows and starlings who nest in his coat and on his horns. The soil here is rich, and the scent of it hangs thickly, as if it has just rained. Sunlight perpetually streams through the gaps in the leaves, gilding all who step beneath the canopy.

Ruffle Glasswing Water Lilies Sweet Songbird

Where sunlight touches on the trees,
the leaves gently uncoil,
and airborne seeds follow the breeze
to skim the gilded soil.

A quiet hand to guide the way
for eager blooms to spread.
Grasses shift and lightly sway
beneath his tender tread.

Like sparks of fire, the sun flashed on the wings of the darting birds as they skimmed the surface of the stream. Shrill, gleeful laughter echoed through the cool glade, and little feet splashed in and out of the water. The birds scattered quickly into the air, spooked by the sudden burst of noise. Aster frowned a little, and moved as if to admonish them.

"Oh, let them be," Celandine said soothingly, "they'll not do any harm."

He shrugged, but shifted closer to the water's edge to keep a closer eye. The pair were relaxing in the shade after an energetic game of 'In and Out of the Feverfew' with a few of the hatchlings Celandine was minding for the day. The young ones didn't seem to have burnt off their energy, however, and Aster was worried they'd disturb the wildlife.

"What's that one called?" asked an inquisitive Spiral, appearing suddenly behind Aster's shoulder and indicating a nearby specimen perched statue-still among the rushes and reeds. The Gaoler tilted his shaggy head to regard the bird the young one pointed to.

"A kingfisher," he answered shortly. "They call them the halycon bird."

"Hal-see-on?" The Spiral tried to get her tongue around the strange word. "Why?"

Aster sighed. Endless questions. It was why he preferred solitude. But the little dragon's eyes were wide and guileless, and he could feel his mate's amused gaze on his back, so he gave in.

"They're named for a princess from long ago, Alcyone. It's a sad story, actually, an ancient tragedy."

"A story!" piped up a Tundra, scrambling to come and sit nearby. "What story?"

Biting back an impatient retort, Aster continued. "It's said she and her husband, Ceyx, loved eachother so completely that the gods grew jealous. When Ceyx left his bride to consult a prophet, the king of the gods struck down his ship in a storm."

The hatchlings gasped. More had joined them now, looking up at him with wide, fascinated eyes, and Aster was warming to his audience.

"The princess was visited in her dreams by a vision of her husband, and learned that he was slain. Alcyone blamed herself - she felt that she had drawn the gods wrath upon them both, and was consumed by grief and guilt. Alone, loveless, torn apart, she went down to the sea and threw herself in, where she drowned."

The Spiral sniffed, as if she thought this was a ridiculous course of action, but the Tundra put his head on one side thoughtfully. "They must have been very happy together, if she was so sad when he died."

Aster smiled gently. "Yes, I think they were. Anyway, here the myth diverges. Some say it was the queen of the gods who took pity on Alcyone, others say that her father was in fact a god himself and begged for mercy on his daughter's behalf. Either way, the lovers were transformed into birds - kingfishers, just like the ones you see there.

"And because of the sufferings of Alcyone and Ceyx, the gods bestowed another favour. At the very height of winter, when the days are shortest, they gave the world a fortnight free from storms. The winds were reined and the waves restrained, so the halcyon birds could safely lay their eggs while the waters were calm."

"Halcyon days," Celandine added, ambling over to join them. "Fondly remembered times of joy and peace."

The two Gaolers regarded eachother over the heads of the hatchlings for a moment, before they started shuffling restlessly and poking each other.

"Come on," Celandine said, leaping out into the glade again. "Let's count the dandelions in the meadow."

As the hatchlings skittered away, giggling and yelling, Aster turned to watch the gently flowing water, where the kingfisher was still poised. Its bright eyes were fixed on something the dragon couldn't see, and he thought of the ancient princess, waiting beside the sea for her lover to return. And just like the princess, the bird suddenly darted towards the water's surface, but pulled up its dive at the last moment to soar upwards again, this time with a struggling minnow clutched in its beak.

"It was the rainbow gave thee birth," Aster murmured quietly, "and left thee all her lovely hues."*
