SANGUINIS
Blood Roots Feral | Territorial | Reclusive
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
blood-red skin. blood-red scars.
within this vessel, the flowers mar pure white petals once matched its soul but alas, it turned cynical long ago ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Pure white flowers are a stark contrast against the ruddy bodies decorated in carcasses of fallen beasts in which they thrive. Glistening with droplets of dew and nectar, they gorge themselves on the crimson essence left for them. To a sane mind, the scent their petals emit is gut churning. Fresh, sweet meat is the best way to describe the smell of these blooms, though only to mirror dragons does the allure really draw anyone in to voluntarily breathe it in. While parasitic in nature, the snow colored blossoms are known as the blood roots, and must be harvested very carefully. They can be used for medicinal properties, clearing contamination and plague from a dragon if prepared appropriately. Dragons seeking its healing properties will travel far across the harsh territory of the plague flight in search of Milky Tea Patisserie, a rare oasis amongst the bone ridden land that provides medicinal teas and pastries with the blood roots’ blossoms. While the dragons that these blossoms live off of are mysterious and silent, they know that their ivory blooms can be used for good rather than the death they invoke if consumed without proper preparation. old lore:
All it takes is a single seed. The parasitic roots spread hungrily across flesh and intricately weave themselves into the host’s bloodstream, rendering it extremely hard to get rid of; if not fully removed, the chance is high that they’ll regrow, like weeds. It’s a smart parasite, it is.
The petals of blood root flowers are soft, like silk. But you'd better believe that the buds are painful as they slowly squirm their way out, not unlike a determined splinter. At first tiny, it unfurls over time, and still feeding on the roots beneath, grow quickly.
Harvest takes a delicate claw. It's not hard to accidentally damage a blood vessel, and I'm not keen on dying from internal bleeding. Do let me assure you that the blossom currently protruding from my skull won't cause me brain damage as long as [NAME] does the job correctly. It's important to remove as much of the root as possible along with each flower; that's where most of the medicine lays, and if I'm going to be going under a knife, I'd better be extracting as much as possible. Honestly, though, I don't mind just ripping one of those suckers out every now and then. It hurts, but it feels kind of metal at the same time.
Actually, my horn wasn't lost to blood roots, though I'm thinking the other one is definitely gonna go soon. My ear and eye were. I got infected before [NAME]'s magic really came in; there wasn't much they could do at the time. Soothe wounds, maybe. Regeneration, not so much. These few stitches are actually theirs, though they switched from stitching to magic after they got better with magic. Yeah, and there's nothing magic can do about scars. Pretty much my whole appearance is cos of these flowers. They bleach the hair, they turn the skin bloody red, and the scars from extracted flowers are even bloodier red, for some reason.
I'm very lucky that I have a partner like [NAME]. Supposedly there are a lot of dragons that hope to profit off of blood root hosts and keep them caged like some living farm. I'm fine profiting off of myself, thank you very much. I do feel a bit bad for [NAME], though. I try not to dwell on it, but being the personal nurse of a blood root host is exhausting. They're a darn good surgeon, but those flowers don't bother waiting for recovery. It's very fortunate that they have innate healing magic, but there's only so much mana one can produce every day. 'S why I'm in bandages right now. Well, what can ya do?
