Biography
I've spent a long time wondering where I belong. My whole life, probably. In my first home, a water lair, I found love, but then lost my children before they hatched. I left. The place--the company--they all reminded me of the loss and pain. My next home was an arcane clan. It was fine, but busy. the other dragons buzzed around me in a frenzy, always studying something. so left. it wasn't home. I found another clan, and another love. Had more children. Raised one, Asiah, who was a splitting image of myself if not for her sapphire eyes. I thought maybe, this one was home. But then the clan began to dissolve around me, like salt in water. One by one they all left, leaving the bubbling springs of the tsunami flats as my only company. So, I left again. That's when I met River. From afar, her appearance was oddly stoic, despite her age and scarring. She carried herself with a certain amount of stubborn pride. In tow was a small band of other dragons, presumably a hunting party. One of them pointed in my direction. I drew closer and dipped into a bow of greeting. The other dragons did the same, though their demeanors now revealed a tension which hung in the air. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, I am Naloth, son of Stonewing and Cha 'Rizard." River squinted at me, and turned her head. She looked pained. A long silence hung in the air. "My name is River," she spoke, "Matriarch of this clan. Cha 'Rizard was my son. You bear a striking resemblance to his father." Now it was my turn to be shocked. River and I couldn't look more different, from our jewel tone eyes to her blue hide against my orange. But she was family, I could feel it. Blood of my blood. And here, so close to my old lair, too. "River," I responded, perhaps a bit too quick. "I... I'm lost. My clan disbanded. I have nowhere to go, and I've been seeking a home." I paused, glancing down at my feet. "A real home. She stiffened. "Your forefather, my first mate--caused me great anguish. You bear a striking resemblance to him. If I allow you into the clan, it will be a physical reminder of these things, which cannot be undone. Your presence causes me pain, like newly opened scars." My heart sank. I could see she was about to object further, but a bright young spiral pushed forward out of the crowd. She held up a small, colorful scroll in her forepaws and squeaked at River. "River, I understand your frustration, but you cannot hide from this forever, it isn't healthy. You must confront that pain, if you ever wish to heal from it." "Besides," she added, gesturing with the scroll, "Naloth may look like him now but she doesn't have to..." She smiled. "We can fix that". |
