Biography
Hunger
100 Hatchling Challenge
“The Curse”
“I’ll do anything,” the red Mirror begs.
The witch doctor’s malicious smile is hidden by the shadows of the cave. “If you’re so desperate, you wouldn’t mind too much if there was...let’s say, a bit of a trial beforehand.”
“A trial?” the Mirror asks. A trial doesn’t sound so bad, she thinks. As long as I get the end result, as long as I find true love.....
The witch doctor rubs his hands together, the bones and bits and bobs jangling around his wrists and on his shoulders. “You see, the spirits like to play games. I’ll ask them what they’d like you to do.” He wraps his claws around the crimson crystal ball, reducing the light in the cave to only the beams protruding between his fingers as he screws up his eyes in concentration. His eyes flash open, widening in shock for a moment before he masks his expression with a look of careful indifference.
“You must have one hundred hatchlings, with many different mates, all of whom will die,” he tells her solemnly.
The Mirror stares at the witch doctor in disbelief. “I beg your pardon?”
“One hundred hatchlings.” The witch doctor nods seriously. The air is thick with tension, almost viscous. Each breath becomes a struggle as he adds, “The fathers of these first hundred hatchlings will die.”
The Mirror stands up. “I’ve changed my mind,” she announces tersely, and turns to stalk away.
The light blinks out.
Shadows scream silently from around the Mirror, who whirls around, blinking her four eyes and waiting for them to adjust, but to no avail. The spirits whip around the Mirror, buffeting her with wings of ice. She cowers; they do not relent.
“I’m sorry! I’ll do it!” she screams in a desperate attempt to stop the attack, and in an instant the light blinks back on, dim and bloodred but relieving. The wings of ice stop hitting the Mirror, who is left shivering on the floor, battered and bruised.
“You can’t go back on your deal,” the witch doctor warns, “or they will take you, and you’ll become one of them, wandering the lands in despair.”
