It was a cool summer morning when the young human Vincent Callaway ascended the ancient, winding pathways of the mountain nearby his home in the budding colonies of the New World. Watching the sunrise had become a frequent habit recently; this time of peace and stillness before the slow waking of the town had him at complete ease. Dew hovered light and cool in the air, carrying with it the promise of a humid afternoon. Despite this, the boy found himself unbothered by the notion.

Little had he known just how much his world was about to change. As he sat and waited for the sun peeking over the horizon, its first rays glinted brilliantly off of a peculiar object adjacent to him. Curious-- as humans often are, he approached the light sparkling amidst a pile of unassuming rocks. Vincent would later not be able to explain what had come over him in that moment; why he had felt compelled to touch, but compelled he was. The boy took the glowing object in hesitant hands, and fell into complete darkness.

Waking up, the first thing Vincent noticed had been the excruciating pain overtaking the hand that had first touched the object-- a citrine gemstone, which had somehow shrunk. From the point where he'd made contact with the stone, an oddly-shaped burn had blossomed, shooting out into straight lines trailing up his forearm like rays of sunlight. The second thing he noticed was a feeling of being... watched, as though some entity had arrived and peered directly into his soul. This, more than the burn that was sure to scar, alarmed him. Seeking the source of this strange feeling yielded no results. Later, he would learn that his observer was inside of him-- the soul of a dragon, slumbering in the stone for eons, had awoken at his touch and been released into his own body.
