rewriting lore

A soft wind rustled through the dense canopy. Thick, warm sunlight drifted down from the lazy heavens, enveloping the garden in a hazy glow. The tips of the mangroves shone with golden brilliance, and the calls of the birds rang through the peaceful grove. Water trickled into the pool from the gentle northern slope, and the reeds and grasses waltzed as the waves lapped at them. Overhead, dragons wove through the billowing clouds.

It is times like these when I feel loneliest, as if I were lingering in the past when all the world were joyful. Every day as the sun sank into its nightly slumber, so too did my sorrows, and the rekindled pain left me charred, despite the cool dusk air. Should I confess my hurt, most would scoff. I have power, glory, and wealth. They are not wrong. Yet grief lingers, festering.

The Hopeling Foundation was once known throughout the Gladekeeper's domain as a sanctuary for parentless hatchlings. They trained the young dragons to be noble followers of the Gladekeeper. Many were exalted to serve as her soldiers and attendants, and the academy was of the highest prestige. Yet it is likely most have never heard even whispers of it.

It was here that I opened my eyes. As soon as I could walk, I was taught to read. As soon as I could speak, I was taught to hold myself high, always bow to your superiors, and to never question authority. I was served fine food, and had a soft, quiet nest to sleep in at night. I had all the scrolls and books I wanted and was allowed to visit the marketplace once every other week to buy all sorts of trinkets. I made a close friend - Tangent. He was a gentle pearlcatcher, and would let me ride on his back as we walked the campus. We would take long flights together through the canopy, squinting against the brilliance of the sunset. We'd laugh about the petty wars other flights fought, which all seemed so far away from our own lives.

The campus itself was massive. It was nestled between the Pox Consulate and the Everbloom Gardens - two of the best places to find lonely eggs. Great spires of white spruce and grand fir trees encircled the area, marking the boundary. Polished wood bridges tied together with cordgrass and fiber ropes connect ornately decorated buildings high in the canopy, and long lines connect the housing units on the forest floor to the education area. The housing, each holding two nests, are stacked atop each other like a sized-up, precariously balanced pile of bricks. The top of each stack has a gently curving roof, with grooves to direct rain away from the walkways and to back alleys.

Every morning I would struggle to wake Tangent, then drag him to breakfast. We'd fly to our classes as we were taught various skills such as hunting food, fighting enemy flights, weaving, formal introductions, which plants were poisonous, which would eat you, and - my best - the art of Nature magic. I learned how to move plants with ancient words, their meanings long forgotten by most, but echoed and magnified many thousands of times in the library's archives. I learned to listen to the wildlife, and how to fly with the birds without scaring them away. I learned to fashion weapons of wood deadlier than those made of rare metals. Late at night, and in my spare time, I would further my own learning with dusty volumes I filched from the off-limits shelves scattered throughout the Foundation.

Many years passed, and I was content.
