The hidden cave’s rusted chimes sang with alarm as the Seer abruptly snapped out of a search. An uninvited visitor had arrived.
She had been following the hasty guide of concerned benevolent spirits through ashen valleys and putrid plains when the vision startlingly tore itself at the edges, successfully escaping her grasp. A freezing mantle tightly draped around her mind, leaving the pearlcatcher unanchored and devoid of stimuli, if not for the enchanted chimes that called from within.
The whiplash was acute as she pulled herself out of the void, taking a moment for her senses to surface from the cloud of residual static. The ritual candlelight flickered wildly behind her shut eyelids, her pearl resonated warm and safe in her arms while incense smoke caressed her wings and whiskers. A stark contrast to the howling, crisp air draft from the intruder’s direction. There was also a feeling of dread biting into her entrails which she dismissed with a furrowing brow.
“How unusual.” she thought. The surrounding area was closely monitored by Akala and Veraxes so no one expected trouble. She dipped her head slowly. Closing her inner vision would require further amends but this would have to do for now, after all, her attention was elsewhere. Pirouette calmly opened her eyes to reveal Kasib upon her dimly lit workbench, whose startled gaze shot to her only to become fixated on the room entrance as they vibrated restlessly in their enclosure. Apparently, she wasn’t the only one who didn’t foresee today’s events.
With every approaching crunch of gravel, brush of wings against the cavern walls and rolling debris from the passages, the cold wind brought answers. The metallic and rotten stench reminded Pirouette of the unforgiving lands that the spirits had urged her towards. This visitor was most certainly not a local. With a sigh, she whispered “Terribly ironic if you ask me,” as she gently freed the familiar from the crystal, who unexpectedly did not flee. In any other situation, she would have been pleased.
-
The Seer brought herself to her proud height and unfurled her wings as the heavy steps slowly prowled with intent around the corner, stopping a medium distance away from her back. The intruder had announced themselves on purpose. “Interrupting a ritual is nothing short of insulting," she intoned serenely. "Are you aware of your impertinence?” her voice faintly echoed through the passages; only to be answered with odd, gruesome breathing. Steeled for the unexpected, she secured her pearl in her hind claw and allowed her horn to glow before impassively turning, only to hesitate as golden irises met a set of vibrant crimson.
It appeared as though she would have to search no longer.
