My fiancé died in February.

I say it and it tastes like something numb on my tongue,
a nightmare that happened so long ago it’s like a dream that i never really wake up from
The world is soft around the edges and nothing I do matters.

Sometimes it feels like you were always Elsewhere and never real. Like this is the second chapter in a daydream turned dark.

But -

Once, you loved me
Once, you said it every chance you got
Once, this wasn’t a nightmare but reality
Once, the world felt solid and sure
Once, you were here.

My fiancé died in February, I say.
How tragic, they say, and
I’m sorry for your loss,
imagining there is pain hiding behind my smile,
and there’s always a note of sympathy that make me laugh.

what sympathy can a stranger give me?
who could be as sorry for your loss as me?
And yet, these strangers stand
pain written in their eyes and their brows furrowed
their souls weeping for the imagined agony
while I laugh and shake my head

but this is just a dream,
and the world is soft around the edges.



the words beat against the inside of my skull,
too much and not enough
conversations with the not-so-long dead
and will you still be here, long after i am gone, guiding and loving?
ones that are full of curiosity and joy and adoration and love
apologies for negligence and stolen kisses that are cold and firm

time moves too fast, butterfly wings against the bone that confines it
desperate promises, deep breaths
you aren’t and i can’t and it’s so different and

the lifespan of a butterfly is short;
the weight of your loss settles slow on my shoulders
and the more it settles the less i can breathe
because i can remember everything, everything

but this is just a dream,
and the world is soft around the edges.
