While Viridians have adapted and survived with memories and thoughts of their own, the Overgrown succumb to the will of the Plant. Their memories from previous times are fuzzy and corrupted, if they maintained their sanity, those memories feel like distant dreams they had. Once they begin their corruption, their memories are forgotten, becoming distant, and after a while, they’re erased completely.
The Viridians think that once they start turning, once they’re down that path, they’re guaranteed to turn into mindless animals. The Overgrown are far more lethal than the Viridians due to the fact they lose their minds after a stage of infection. However, some Overgrown retain their consciousness, and are no more dangerous than the Viridians. Sending away these new Overgrown is seen as necessary by the Viridians, and as an act of aggressive betrayal by the Overgrown. It fuels their fights between them, and stimulates the feelings of hurt and betrayal.
However, if you run into the true Overgrown; beware. They are the mindless monsters that the Viridians make them out to be. They carry out The Plant’s wishes without any thought since they don’t have a consciousness and will attack you on sight, set on claiming their lives for The Plant. Even the oldest of the conscious Overgrown recognize them as the monsters they truly are, and all live in the constant fear of the day they will become exactly like those they seek to separate themselves from.
